Returning equipment

I was recently forced to cancel my Sky broadband as the new address I moved to did not have a BT phone line and installing one was hard to do.

I cancelled my contract with no issue, on the call I asked about returning my equipment and told it was not needed as the router was very old. I've now been told I will be charged for not returning my equipment. How do I have this corrected and confirmed that I don't need to return anything.
