Replacing Max Hub with my own 3rd party router
I have the FTTP Gigafast package. Adtran ONT
The range of the Sky Max Hub is pretty poor and it seems to have stability problems when multiple devices are connected to it. I'm not sure if it's Sky or Openreach's fault, but some sites like YouTube will buffer, which didn't used to happen on the same devices with my Virgin Media Gig1 service
The router also doesn't let me split the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into separate SSIDs, nor does it let me manually select the WiFi channel. So I am looking to replace it with a better WiFi 6E Tri-band router that I'd have much more control over. How would I go about setting it up? Are there any sign in details I would need to input in the new router interface?
Have any of you done this and seen notable benefits to signal and stability overall?

Re: Replacing Max Hub with my own 3rd party router
@RB9 not all routers can connect to Sky FTTP services but the range from Asus are popular and quite easy to set up with walk throughs for most models in the forum.which model you want depends on your budget and use case. Splitting wifi bands will limit wifi speeds as wifi6 requires both bands to be synchronised.
Getting rid of the Sky hub means you losevtge voice line which msybe an issue and Skybwill require it to be re-connected to deal with line faults etc.
An alternative is to keep the Sky hub as a router, disable its wifi and use a third party WiFi mesh system funning in access point mode.

Re: Replacing Max Hub with my own 3rd party router
I do not mind losing Sky Talk and won't mind reconnecting the old router with phone line if they ever need to run tests. I will look into some ASUS routers
Is the compatibility problems with most routers a Sky problem? Do EE, BT, Vodafone etc suffer from the same thing when choosing a new router?

@RB9 Sky use a different authentication system which not all router manufacturers support. You need to look for support for DHCPv4 Option61 which all exchanges support without that you need to use DHCPv6 PD which only roughly 80% of exchanges support. For example TP-Link routers dont offer that option in their firmware.

@Chriseedo you know if the ASUS RT AX68U and Netgear Nighthawk RAX200 have support for Option61?
Do you have any recommendations for a decent WiFi 6 router under £100 that would work with Sky FTTP?
