Replace sky router with Asus RT-AX58

Hi guys, I'm just looking for a little assistance.

We have sky broadband and over the last few months, the wifi is continually dropping out. I read some bits and pieces on here and decided that i should replace the router entirely to get a better setup.

It would appear that i didn't do enough research though which is why i'm looking for help and assistance.

We have an openreach mk master socket which has been connected to a seperate faceplate containing coax for tv etc. This was done before we moved in (new house). We also have a one of the older sky Q hubs (looking online, the 2018 model).

I've purchased an Asus RT-AX58U router which i setup yesterday. Currently, the new router is connected directly to the old sky hub and i've disabled wifi on the sky one.

I'd like to do away with the Sky hub completely. From my further research, i believe i should've bought a router that had a dsl input also and as i haven't, would now need a seperate third party modem. Is this correct and if so, could anyone recommend a suitable replacement?

I'd like to go ideally straight into the master socket with the asus but i'm not sure if this would either a, work or b be suitable for us as the positioning of the socket would mean that the new router is an awkward spot.

Look forward to any help.

Thanks guys 😁

@Mojo1986 If you do not get the DSL version off the Asus, then you are NOT connection to the Master Socket without a Sky or Another device that has the DSL modem, it's a simple as that.

@Mojo1986 the cheapest workround is to use a cheap modem router in bridge mode like this one but check it is suitable yourself before buying see https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/2728/

@Mojo1986 And as @Chrisee has pointed out is suitable for your speed connection on fttc, but the Sky router is free, just watch how you setup the Asus RT router mode, Wan asus to lan Sky, but if you wish to avoid the double nat Tp-Link the way to go, personally send the Asus RT back as not suitable and find the DSL version less heartaches and headaches.

Sorry @JimM1 I was suggesting the TP-Link to be used in bridge mode as a "modem" to connect to the Asus not a router itself. Although that unit  is a WiFi router itself it is very basic and not as good as the Sky hub. @Mojo1986 you can buy a dedicated VDSL modem from companies like Draytek but they are not cheaper and do not offer any advantages in speed of connection..

The alternative setup  is of connecting the Asus behind the Sky hub invlovescaxdouble NAT which will work for most apps but can create issues for some.

@Mojo1986 Asus DSL router's are pretty thin on the ground, Loads second hand but new see the link below as AN idea.

Also this is not addressing any specific problem or problems you are having, and may not be the magic pill you are looking at, even if you have a landline phone. Everyone has to learn but your are going about it step by step.

Re: Replace sky router with Asus RT-AX58

Just had a quick look on amazon, as you say not too many about.

Don't really want a used one. Would you suggest i'd be better off with a different brand/type?
