Replace Sky SR213 router with own router

I am not too impressed with the speed and range that the SR213 router offers, so I am looking to replace this with my own router. Ideally, I would like to completely do away with the Sky router so there is no piggy-backing involved.

I am looking for recommendations for a fairly recent and modern router that will work for this purpose, with a budget of about £300. We will be using it for streaming and gaming across multiple devices, and hopefully we can find something that will last us a while.

From research I undestand that the router needs specific settings and features to work with Sky in the UK? I hear that ASUS routers seem to work well and the ASUS RT AX88U seems to come up in conversation a lot - is this still the best option in 2024, or are there better alternatives? We have also come across the AX6000, would this work for the purposes I need?

Thank you for any help or advice!

Note that doing so removes the option of using the bundled voice call service (Sky Talk Internet Calls)

Re: Replace Sky SR213 router with own router

We do not have this service, and only take calls on our mobiles - so this wouldn't be a problem whatsoever.

I should have also mentioned that we are on Sky Ultrafast FTTP.

You will have it because it's always bundled by default, but can safely ignore it if you don't have a telephone handset plugged into the Hub.  There's no cost if outbound calls aren't made.

Good to know! We have no reason to use it so I wasn't aware that we even had it.
