PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

Hey

I wonder if anyone can help, my internet as a whole has been great. Download speeds are found no issue with my SkyQ or laptops. However, my PS5 has terrible lag, and playing any online game is impossible. I'm in a 1 bed flat and my router is only one room along so I can't imagine it is anything to do with the position of my box?

Has anyone had similar? Previously I was with BT and was in a 3 story house with my box on the bottom floor and had zero issues with lag when playing online.

Thanks,

Hi @EssexGamer

If you search online you'll find quite a lot of people have had issues with the PS5s Wifi capabilities so its not just Sky to blame.

Either way you should really be using ethernet to play games, especially if you live in a flat as you are surrounded by other routers that will be interfering with the signals from your own hub which causes major issues for gaming.

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

When I run a connection test my download speed on the PS5 is 20Mnbps but when I run tests on laptop I'm getting aroud 70-80mbps.

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

You should try ethernet powerline adapters if the distance to the router to PS5 is not feasable. Essentially they turn the earth cable in your electric circuit into an ethernet cable. TP link or netgear are good products and some also extend wifi for other devices. Decent speed ones are about 40 quid on Amazon.

With sky fibre and a TP-link adapter I get up to 150Mps down on my Series X. ping is about 10ms and mostly no noticable lag.

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

Turn off all your sky q boxes (at the mains/wall) and just leave the router switched on and try again.  I have a feeling this could be another of the many issues related to the Sky Q mesh.

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

I haven't got a solution but my 14 year old son cannot play online any more as the lag is so bad. It's only been the last 3 weeks and we've tried wiring it, connection all good etc.
No idea what to do. The atmosphere in our house is horrible. Is it the ps5 or Sky?

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

Hi, not sure about ALL games on PS5 but there are certainly issues with FIFA servers on the PS5. Hardwiring direct to hub is definitely the best option for gaming as using WiFi can add at least 3-7ms latency ( lag ).  There is one thing to try and that's changing the DNS servers.

Make a note of current d/l  u/l  speeds before trying these.

cloudflare

primary dns 1.1.1.1

secondary dns 1.0.0.1

google

primary dns 8.8.8.8

secondary dns 8.8.4.4

do connection test after each change and see if you get any improvement.

@Peddars

Pointing a client at any DNS server other than Sky's is pointless, eg: Sky uses a transparent DNS proxy in their routers. Only using a third party router would allow alternative DNS providers.

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

I keep reading about wiring the Ethernet cable, but we have no socket in the room that the ps5 is in. Would wiring it to something like the sky mini box help or maybe a wi-fi extender?

@Lozand

It's worth a try to wire it into the Sky Q mini box but doubt it'll make much difference?

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

I just don't get it. It's only been like this for 2/3 weeks and I can't figure out what it is as nothing has changed. Going to try and turn off all other boxes etc and see if that works. If it does then it's a Sky mini box issue and we will be swapping provider.

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

@mae-3

I think you misunderstood my post, I wasn't referring to them changing the dns in the hub,

only in their games console. Maybe I didn't make that clear. The dns settings can be changed on any device regardless of ISP.

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

@Peddars

DNS queries are transparently proxied by the Sky router and even changing those settings on client devices will not work, eg: the router catches anything going via UDP port 53 and sends them to Sky's DNS servers.

If you'd like to try use https://www.dnsleaktest.com and you'll find it reports Sky's DNS servers even when changing them to say Google's or anything else you like on the client device.

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

Hi,

I bought a wifi extender and plugged it in his room, even though the wi-fi isn't the problem. It has an Ethernet point though so I bought a cable, switched the ps5 to LAN connection and it seems to have sorted it. Not perfect but so much  better.
