Own router with FTTP Broadband
Hi everyone,
I recently updgraded my broadbang to the UltraFast fiber 1Gbps. Sky said I can use my old router they provided, which I tried, but the WiFi on it is very slow. I have my own WiFi Router that's capable of WiFi 6e and would like to connect that directly to the OpenReach box, skipping Sky's equipment as I do not have Sky Q/TV nor a landline and it would simplify my setup.
To provide more details, I have an OpenReach box with 4 LEDs on it that seems to be the fiber optic termination point. Then I connected a UTP cat 6 cable between said box and either my router or Sky's Hub. This is where the previous tenants had a Vodafone Router plugged in before, which seems to still work?
Whenever I connect my own router with DHCP I get an internet connection but it seems limited to 75Mbps. My router supports PPPoE and DHCP configuration and I've tried both with different usernames and passwords I managed to find on different forums but nothing seems to alleviate the issue. I've come across a few posts mentioning DHCP option 61, which my router does not have, but I'm not sure if that's even applicable here.
I essentially have two questions for the community:
1. Why would my internet connection work but be limited to 75 Mbps with my own router and only provide the full speed with Sky's equipment.
2. Is there a WiFi 7 router that is known to work with Sky's Broadband directly?
Thanks in advance,
Herc

Re: Own router with FTTP Broadband
@HercDotMe What is your own router and does it have a gigabit ethernet interface on it! Wan mode has to be DHCP!
If you do not have any wi-fi 7 devices then you do not need a wi-fi 7 router! See the link below for my Asus settings!

Re: Own router with FTTP Broadband
Thanks Jim,
I have a few devices that use WiFi 6e and my router supports WiFi 6 as well. It's a Linksys Mesh system. I do not currently have any devices that use WiFi 7 but I thought if I were to buy a new router, might as well.
If I set the WAN mode to DHCP - Automatic I can only get 75 Mbps wired into it. It is always also consistently limited to that speed. I will do another test tomorrow and see what's what.
Thanks,
Herc

Re: Own router with FTTP Broadband
@JimM1 Thanks for your info. I have just set it up all over again. Went with just DHCP, nothing extra, no VLAN ID, no Option 61 and although it took about 20 minutes for it to stabilize, I now get the full 1 Gbps when wired using just my router, without Sky's equipment in front.

Re: Own router with FTTP Broadband
@HercDotMe Glad you got it all going, but do the Forum a favour and Post the Linksys details, that includes the model that you have, takes away all the guessing and vagueness for anyone else coming up against it all!
We are all customers just like you trying to help and pass on what we can to others.

Re: Own router with FTTP Broadband
Here's the info including model and make of the router and settings page.
I am using a Linksys Mesh system, these are the settings required on your gateway node. Essentially, it's all default DHCP.
The speed reported by the router is a bit lower as there's a few streams and downloads going on but if I stop everything and connect the cable into my laptop I get around 920 Mbps down and 98 Mbps up.
Hope this helps fellow users.

Re: Own router with FTTP Broadband
Since I cannot edit my reply, the router is a Linksys MX5500. You only need to do the internet settings on the mesh node connected to the OpenReach box, the others are full default settings bar for the naming if you care for that.
Hope this helps the search engines index this thread.
