ONT in electrical cupboard meaning internet is poor throughout the flat.
Hi all,
Just joined sky start of this week.
My ONT connection is in the electrical cupboard which is at the font of the flat in the hallway.
If i do a speed check in the hallway I am getting the 500 mb I am paying for.
In the livingroom which is at the otherside of the flat, my speed test shows I get 30 mb
My playstation in the spare room - which is diretly in front of the electrical cupboard only shows 120mb.
What options do I have to replace or improve the speeds?

Re: ONT in electrical cupboard meaning internet is poor throughout the flat.
@Carloc1991 quite why the people who design buildings think that the concept of a "comms cupboard" ia good thing is a mystery.
The best solution is to buy a longer ethernet cable and move the hub out into the flat. In blocks it is pretty difficult to get ONTs moved but the cable from that to a router can be up to 100m without losing speed. Dont need anything fancy any cat5e or cat6 cable is suitable.

Check for a patch panel something like this in the cupboard.
If there's one there then there should also be single ethernet connections in each room.So you conect enthernet cable to the patch panel's relevent port & another cable or Wireless Access Point to the corresponding socket in a room. Sadly these are rarely labelled, so may require some trial & error.

@FLC that is a great idea BUT the traffic from the ONT to the hub must be kept entirely separate from the traffic from the hub to devices so if you want to use any of the other ethernet connections in other rooms it will cause issues.

Re: ONT in electrical cupboard meaning internet is poor throughout the flat.
Kinda goes without saying really.
If the patch panel was used to connect the ONT to the Hub in another room, there would be no way to connect the Hub to the patch panel.
If it was used as intended, to patch ethernet into the rooms, then the Hub would remain in the cupboard. So no need to disconnect the ONT.

@FLC unless you want to use WiFi which was the issue raised.
