Moved house and Sky Broadband is super slow..

Hello

We recently moved house and moved our broadband package over with it. We know we can't get high speeds where we are- we are rural.

However, we have paid for the best available.

It has been woeful since we're here. Drops out constantly- I bought boosters as we have dead spots. I checked the speed and as you can see- super slow.

An Openreach engineer is coming out to check. I'll see what they say. Our minimum guaranteed speed is 16mb so Sky have told us we can get out of the contract without fees- thank goodness. A local provider, which doesn't use Openreach, does offer full fibre for our area.

Does it look like there is a fault on the line, which the engineer can fix?

There's very little point in you persevering with what's at best a dodgy copper circuit if there's an altnet offering full fibre.  Realistically Openreach just doesn't want to be spending its time on legacy copper connections when it has a national FTTP rollout target to meet.

I was wondering whether I could get it to hobble along until Openreach finally get here with the fibre- apparently some time in the next 12 months.

if switching is a hassle etc. but if this is going to be the reality going forward I'm very tempted to jump ship- although are smaller local ISPs more risky?

Unfortunately any other Openreach ISP will be using exactly the same copper circuit, so isn't going to be able to offer better speed.  It's possible your engineer visit will at least get you back up to  the 16Mbs quoted minimum by remedying a transient line fault: for FTTC it's distance to the local fibre cabinet which is the biggest factor.

There's always the possibility that a small ISP is going to get its sums wrong and run out of money, which is rather less of a risk with Sky (five million customers) or BT/EE (twelve million)
