Location of exterior and interior boxes for Sky Broadband

Hi all

Recently signed up for Sky Broadband to go with the Sky TV we've had for a few years. They came to fit the exterior box today (only realised when I saw something moved in the garden!) - the box is fitted on our side wall, near the back of the house, with the wire going up and then across to the telephone pole at the bottom of my garden. I didn't even really consider it but now wondering wheter its the right place for this.

I currently have Virgin broadband and it comes in a drilled hole at the front of the house, with the router located on the other side of the wall, kind of in the front corner of the house, probably not the best place for it. I'm not totally clear on how it all works so any advice here would be appreciated.

As I understand it, an interior box will be fitted on the other side of the wall where the exterior box is located, and then wiring goes from there? As it stands, that would be in the crawlspace underneath my kitchen, which seems an odd place to have it.

Would the engineer then take wiring from that interior box to whereever the router is to be located? How would they do this without it being really visible in the house? I have considered moving the router to somewhere more central in the house - should it be downstairs?

Or would it make sense to have it come in where the virgin broadband wiring is and remove that?

Would they move the exterior box to do that? or take the wire from there and bring it around the house to the already drilled hole at the front?

Sorry, very little knowledge on this so any/all advice would be appreciated!

@DK0904 Unless the installation team have done a similar home to yours before they may have already had the idea what they are doing with it. Normally the like to keep the final part with there pre-fixed length cables from the in/ot part wit as straight a connection as possible, the ONT has to go near a power socket, they like to have 2off as the want to plonk the hub next to it as the supplied cable is so short. If you want it in a different position then 2 choices, see if the installer will run the fibre to where you want the ONT, that may just be a No-No. After yhis then up to you to get Ethernet cable run it as you require to the position that you want the hub in. Link below about where.

Place your router in a central, unobstructed location to ensure you have a strong Wi-Fi signal throughout your home.

Aim for the center of the most important area of your home.

If you have a home with multiple floors, consider which floors you frequent the most.

Keep your router in an open space away from concrete/brick walls, electronics, water and microwaves.

Raise your router up to allow the signals to transmit to every area of your home.

This sounds  like a full  fibre  to the property  installation the fibre optic cable  comes  from the telegraph pole  to the box  outside  the house then from  the box to the inside  to the optical network terminal box like the 2 photos here

and then the cable  from here to the router, I  have had this since  January  last year, sky gigafast full fibre broadband 900mps  and have had no problems

Re: Location of exterior and interior boxes for Sky Broadband

So is that optical network terminal box on the inside of your home just on the other side of the wall where the grey box on the outside is? Does the white box need to be near a double socket?

Because if thats the case for my house, it'll be under my ground floor, which...would not be too clever - i'd have advised them not to put the grey box where they put it!

@DK0904 The outside grey box called the csp is where the External fibre comes from and the splicing point for the Internal where A joins B.

There are a few In/Out methods, but yes 1 In through the inside off the Box out to the Inside off the house, and there is NO hard and fast rules what is best or needs to be done, I had OR bring the Fibre direct off the pole to the roof then straight up the roof truss into the dormier and the csp is fitted there inside see picture below, Ethernet cable from the ONT then away to the Wan port of the hub, where i wanted to place that for the location. Only Fibre cable is absolutley NO sharp bends they have a minimum radius for the cable to help the light travel best.

My fibre optic cable comes from  the telegraph pole  out the back of my  house around half  the house under  the gutter down the  wall  to the grey box and in, the from the grey box which  is on the side of the house, the cable  then goes from there to the front of my  house about  a foot  off the ground  and into  my  living room  into the back of optical network terminal box took the open reach engineer about two hours  to do

@DK0904

The router/ONT does not have to be placed immediately on the other side of the wall as the CSP. You can ask for cabling to be run further along your skirting board if you want it to be further from the entry hole.

Additionally you don't need a double socket, just a single with an extension lead would suffice.

As I  said before  my grey box  is  on the side of my house the fibre optic cable  runs from it along  the wall about  a foot  off the ground  to a hole  in the  wall  in the  front of the house  into the back of the  optical network terminal box in my living room,
