Limited Range of WIFI

The Router is positioned near my front door. I have moved it so that it is closer. In my car on the drive my WIFI is not shown but it shows several other WIFI's in the street including Sky ones. When I was previously with BT it would detect my WIFI 50 yards away. However the range of my Sky router is very limted, in the house fine, on the drive no signal.

I am confused as to why you need WiFi on your drive? 

Either way Sky wont be interested as they and all other ISPs only have products which can assist with providing a connection within your home, not outside it.
