Lag spikes make gaming online impossible

I have a problem. Using Sky Broadband with Max, booster. I live in a townhouse and game on the top floor. I have good signal strength and download speeds, but when gaming there are massive lag spikes. I play World of Tanks for instance when it has 10mbs and then bam, 600+ mbs. next thing I know I am dead in game and this happens every match.  Asked for a Sky Booster recently and somehow it is worse then ever.

I am a new build house but they didnt give us the grace of installing ethernet ports. So the router is on the ground floor and we can only use Wifi for our devices.

Any help please? I am stuck in a contract until 2027.

@Dazman1985 one solution is to buy a powerline networking kit which uses the mains wiring to carry the data. These units while not as good as ethernet czbling are significantly less liablecto packet loss then poor wifi.

@Dazman1985

I had a simlar problem with online gaming, WOT like you, as the router/ONT was in another room. The only way i found to resolve it was moving router to another room and run a 22m cat 6 cable through my house, therefore able to connect my PC to router by Ethernet. Lags gone.

Obviously its a fiddly job properly running the cable and your place may be more difficult than mine but it was worth it for me.

Re: Lag spikes make gaming online impossible

Yes I have done this before in the past.

Thanks for your reply. I may have to consider that.

That will be one hell of a long cable!

Ha ha

Re: Lag spikes make gaming online impossible

My son uses a cheap £20 AV1000 powerline for his online games.

The speed may not be the max 500Mbs but its consistent 120Mbs  and ping 5ms.
