Increasingly common as young adults return to live with parents, unfortunately. Personally I'd think a 300Mbs service is about right to permit multiple streams with adequate headroom, and something most ISPs are offering now.
One factor in the take-up of unnecessary speed bands is just the minimal incremental pricing: BT keeps offering me 900Mbs for £1 a month more than 500Mbs.

You will get 500 and possibly slightly more. However it does depend on how close to you router your WiFi devices are! The further away they are then you do get reduced speeds. Also it can depend on how many devices are linked to your network and being used at the same time !!!
