How to switch to 3rd Party Router/Modem

Hi All,

So, we have Sky Glass coming tomorrow.  Now that I can ditch the Sky Q, I want to replace the SR204 router with my own 3rd party one, whilst installing a mesh network at the same time.  In another discussion someone has kindly provided the details of some good kit.

What I would like know is - what would be the unsername and password that I would need to input into the new router to access my Sky Broadband?  We have UltraFast 1 fibre.

Thanks

Shaun

Re: How to switch to 3rd Party Router/Modem

Finally got this fixed yesterday after @Chrisee suggestion to search other posts.  If anyone else needs help with this issue, take alook a this THREAD and the post on page 2 by @Ranz07 showing the screenshot of the Asus router settings.

Basically, you input your @skydsl username and password and then change the WAN Connection Type from the default PPPoE to Automatic IP - job done!

@Ifonefreek if you have a SR204 Sky hub it means you are on an Ultrafast service over copper which complicates things as normal moddm routers wont work. You need a G.Fast modem which are rare and quite expensive but Draytek offer one.

In terms of a router you need a router that supports DHCPv4 Option 61 which Asus models mainly do but TP-Link routers don't (confusingly their modem routers do support Sky but it is via the VDSL modem stage you can't use).Netgear seem OK. The log in is standard anything@skydsl for the user and anything  for the password.

@Chrisee thanks for the advice.  Someone mentioned one of these https://draytek.co.uk/products/business/vigor-166

Can anyone recommend a router that's compatible with the Draytek with good wifi capabilities?  We currently have 39 wifi connected products!  I'll porbably also need a gigabit switch for additional LAN connections
Typcial of Sky to make things complicated though - why can't they just do things 'normal' like BT etc?

Just to confirm username and password, it's actually anything@skydsl ???? And password is actually 'anything' ???

The system looks to match a pattern, not for a unique identifier

qwertyuiop@skydsl   / qwertyuiop    will work just as well.

@Ifonefreek any standard router can be connected to the Draytek modem but they have be able to authenticate the connection which requires the Option 61 I mentioned. Budget and your use casecdictates what you want but the Asus range seem well thought of and are normally straighforward to connect - loads of forum posts on the subject if you search. Gigabit switches are not an issue any unmanaged switch should suit which in comparison to routers are as cheap as chips.

Sky domthings their way and are very unlikely to change. Yup the logon requires the format given not the content but are often entered as one string separated by a pipe symbol..

@Ifonefreek

That particular hub is a vdsl modem and a 2.4ghz wifi/ethernet router.  So wouldn't be ideal for a g.fast connection

Have a look at the asus rt ax series of wifi 6 routers that will work with the draytek g.fast modem

Re: How to switch to 3rd Party Router/Modem

@cookiemonsteruk good to know as I was looking at the https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-RT-AX86U-Compatible-Lifetime-Internet/dp/B08CBCR6BB/ref=sr_1_6?crid=G1...

and I did think 'WOW! That's expensive'.

If you don't mind me asking, how many wifi attached devices do you have?  We have 39 -  the '58' handle that many?

@TimmyBGood so, effectively I could mysurname@uiop@skydsl  and mysurnameuiop ?

Am I correct in that I would enter this into my router and not the modem?

Just to note as well that to replace the Sky SR204 Hub I have bought the Draytek Vigor V166 - G.Fast VDSL2 Modem and ASUS RT-AX86U 5700 Dual Band + WiFi 6 Gaming Router.

Already have the Router, whilst the modem is being delivered today.  I'll be carrying out the swapover at the weekend as both my wife and I work from home
