How do I go about getting my landline upgraded to fibre?

Hi All,

I live on a small road that is unadopted gravel / dirt track off of a main road. Our electric and telephone lines are overhead. The current line is analog and punches out a mere 56mbs on a good day. I would like to know how I go about getting the line upgraded to overhead fibre, according to Openreach I have to do it through Sky. Anyone had success?

56Mbs is almost exactly the national average for FTTC, so you're not exactly in a blackspot.

Putting the address into the BT Wholesale Availability Checker should indicate which provisioning type might be available.

It's the table and the two text lines below it which are most useful.

Remove any personal information (such as the address itself) if you post an image.

If it shows wbc fttp at your address then you would need to call sky

Contact sky on 150 from your sky landline oq

Follow the link and choose need more help

If in the Republic of Ireland go to the bottom of the page and change the flag to Republic of Ireland

But note 'FTTP on Demand' means you'd be expected to pay the full cost of a dedicated fibre optic connection to your individual address outside the timescale of the national rollout, which could easily be tens if not hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Basically FTTPoD installations have entirely ceased: Openreach aims to get wholesale FTTP to the 80% of UK addresses within the scope of the commercial rollout by the end of 2026.

OK, you have good FTTC, and no FTTP deployment has been timetabled yet as part of the national rollout.

In theory you could request a quote for FTTPoD, but that's typically unfeasibly expensive.

Is that request through Sky?

No full fibre although you should get up to 73Mbps. Could you post your stats

I don't know if Sky even has a mechanism for processing an FTTPoD request: they are likely just to tell you FTTP isn't available at the address.

To be honest, it's almost certainly not worth the hassle to chase up unless you've got really significant financial resources: in many locations it would be considerably cheaper to move house than pay for a dedicated fibreoptic connection.

I did get a leaflet from a company called Toob who say they are coming to my area but I had that with Virgin years ago and it never happened as I think they cannot dig up the road. Although it would only improve it as you need 4x4 due to pot holes 😜

Toob is an altnet using their own start-up capital to lay fibre: they won't install to any location where they wouldn't get a long-term financial return (ie capital cost exceeds all future subscription income)

56Mb should still be adequate for most things, but the best way to use it within the property is with cabled connections rather than WiFi.
