@Whitters23 Yes to replacing, as long as you do not want the landline use....... Are you google's not router's?

Re: Google Wifi Pro with Sky Full Fibre (FTTP)

@JimM1  Hi. At the moment my setup is:

Sky Router ->(ethernet)-> Google Puck (which is acting as a router) ->(ethernet)->swich ->separate Ethernet cables to  google pucks in the lounge and kitchen.

When I'm on WiFi in the lounge I get a max of 250mbps according to fast.com, but I'm paying for a 500mps connection so trying to get up to the holy grail of 500 (or as close as possible to it) around the house.

I've had the Google WiFi for a number of years (well over 5 years). The setup works, but with the way tech moves on it's not as fast as it could be.

@Whitters23 what apps do you use thst will benefit from faster wifi? In practice apart from downloads there are very few activities that can use your 200Mb/s let alone need more. For example streaming UHD video never uses more than 35Mb/s playing online games averages around 10Mb/s. Higher bandwidth connections are about supporting multiple users at once rather than higher speeds for individual devices.

It is possible to get 500Mb/s in every room and higher but it gets expensive in many homes.  Ask yourself do you switch cars when a maker offers one with higher top speed?

Re: Google Wifi Pro with Sky Full Fibre (FTTP)

@Whitters23 As @Chrisee has pointed out speed is just not everything on a shared network, and you have got to be pushing a download very hard to maximise a server, and hope that it's playing ball with the bandwidth and OR backhaul is keeping you all up.

Asus is not a low cost option, they are very expensive but then again all the NEW kit is up there price wise.

I have NOT one single wi-fi 7 device do not care and only 2 AXe's but no 6Ghz band far as i am concerned waste off money.

I have also sent you a quick PM.

Re: Google Wifi Pro with Sky Full Fibre (FTTP)

@Chrisee @Hi Chrisse.

Very wise and though provoking comments you have suggested.

As the Google WiFi pucks I have are are well over 5 years old (I believe they were the original ones Google started selling) they are definitely not WiFi 6 or 6e capable. My partner and I have have iPhone 14's which are WiFi 6 enabled from memory as an example.

We do the usual streaming etc from the internet. We also have a NAS on the network streaming movies, sound and file transfers.

I work from home all week and my partner works from home 3 days a week minimum. So during the day things get used quite a lot.

I know it's an expense to upgrade but I'll be doing it once in a blue moon (hence the many questions to make sure I try and get a good setup 🙂 ) so a few hundred pounds every 5 to 10 years is OK.

@Whitters23 its your money but my point is that you will see minimal improvement in day to day use.  Streaming movies for example requires well under 50Mb/s even at the highest quality.

Re: Google Wifi Pro with Sky Full Fibre (FTTP)

Hi Guys,

I've found reading this thread very interesting as I think I may be experiencing similar issues and would appreciate your opinions.

About a month ago I changed ISP to Sky, from BT, who I'd been with for five years without any issue.

Since moving to Sky I've had nothing but dropouts of my Ethernet Connected Gaming Devices (PS5/Xbox) that are connected directly to my TP Link Switch. It blips for a split second and reconnects. If you connect via WiFi the issue is significantly reduced.

Things I've tried:

- I've had Sky investigate the issue to no avail.

- I've replaced the main Google WiFi Router with a boxed spare (they come as a three and I only use two), along with patch cables.

- TP Link Switch

- Static IP Addresses

Text diagram of my network below:

Openreach ONT
|
Primary Google WiFi Router
|

TP Link SG1024 24 Port Switch

|
Secondary Google WiFi Puck (Backhaul) Ethernet Devices

Settings also attached.

Am I right in thinking it will never work? Should I be turning IPV6 off?

Thank you

Re: Google Wifi Pro with Sky Full Fibre (FTTP)

@Sheltie28 Quick question was all of the gear you used on that OR Fibre ONT connection before the switch off providers!

When you changed over did you have to make ANY adjustments to the Google router device for operation on the sky Fibre network!

My Asus i had to make one change only from EE back to sky and that was to get the iPv6 operation for iP6 to work correctly!

Re: Google Wifi Pro with Sky Full Fibre (FTTP)

@JimM1 Thanks for your reply.

Yes everything is the same as it has been for the last five years. Switch over day was seamless, received a text from Sky saying service active and didn't have to change anything.

This is one of the reasons why I didn't think it was the hardware at fault, but have changed items for fault diagnosis purposes.

Re: Google Wifi Pro with Sky Full Fibre (FTTP)

Hi- @JimM1  @Sheltie28 Based on previous comments and other articles, I thought it was mentioned that the Google Kit doesn't have  the security protocol that SKY uses.

My setup was (I say was as I've recently moved and not set this back up)

BT FTTP wall socket ->ethernet cable -> Sky Router ->(ethernet)-> Google Puck (which is acting as a router) ->(ethernet)->swich ->separate Ethernet cables to  google pucks in the lounge and kitchen.

@Sheltie28 - it looks like you mention that you're going straight from the BT wall socket to the Google Router, so I wonder if you need to go

wall socket -> sky router -> Google router

i I know this causes a double NAT thing as you have two routers running. I never knew what that meant though and my networked worked well for the time I was at the old property.

Re: Google Wifi Pro with Sky Full Fibre (FTTP)

@Sheltie28 Run the

What Is My IP Address - See Your Public Address - IPv4 & IPv6

see that it returns both IP6 and IP4 addresses, also consider setting your DNS off auto and pointing to google/cloudflare etc not sure what your router will show you when you adjust the setting off Auto! You should have posted up earlier than doing all the swapping about! Your not far away as long as the Router is hanging in there!

Re: Google Wifi Pro with Sky Full Fibre (FTTP)

@Whitters23 Asus Router wan output is direct on the OR ONT, and no setting required for the Mer 61 option, not needed for the fttp operation!

Re: Google Wifi Pro with Sky Full Fibre (FTTP)

@JimM1

Thank you - I've just adjusted the DNS settings and will monitor over the next few days. I am seeing a return for IPv4/6 - believe Sky now supports v6.

@Whitters23 Thanks for the info - if the above doesn't work think I'll have to introduce the Sky router as you say.

@Sheltie28 Sky were one of the esrliest adopters of IP6 which is core to their network solution.
