Gigafast with Sky hub 4.2

Upgraded to Gigafast which is supposed to provide 900Mb/s to the router from Full Fibre 500Mb/s. I a seeing just around 700Mb/s to the router, as reported by Sky App. So where is my other 200 Mb/s to the router. Surely they either need to send a new Sky Max router or advertise Gigafast as 700Mb/s and not 900Mb/s.

I have seen other threads saying you need Sky Max Wifi subscription as an extra cost and when I click that link to see what extra rip off cost I need to pay it tells me I have no upgrade options.

I have Sky Q by the way and I have seen other confusing threads stating Sky Q is not complatibale with Sky Max routers.

So what is the crack... as they say.

I believe the minimum guaranteed speed for Gigafast is 600mbps so you would be over that therefore Sky are providing what is contracted

Those threads are now outdated: Sky will supply both the Max Hub and the WiFi Max subscription supplement at an address with Q

I agree the contract states minimum of 600Mb/s but the advertising states a maximum of 900Mb/s. So they should state that upfront and clearly that you will only get max 700Mb/s which I believe is due to the router rather than the capability of the fibre network.

Completely incorrect, its nothing to do with the router. There is plenty of posts in this forum showing people with Sky Max hubs getting 900mbps.

It completely depends on your area and Sky's kit in the exchange. If your area is highly subscribed you may not get the full 900mbps.

Re: Gigafast with Sky hub 4.2

I don't have a Sky Max router I have Sky Hub 4.2 router hence why I said the router is probably limiting my speed  rather than the fibre network and connection to my home. I was expecting them to replace the existing router with Sky Max router as pretty certain that is what the advertising stated when I was upgrading, but I do not not see anything from them saying they have one to send me in the post so either I misread the advertising or it is unclear.

Personally I find some of the content on the Sky website confusing/frustrating.

A prime example of this is I am on Sky Q but we have trees at the rear and in the summer we sometimes lose signal, so I was investigating getting Sky Stream. So I clicked Stream and was then told, sorry, I was on the the best TV package already with a link to Sky Glass.

The Sky Broadband hub 4.2 is also perfectly capable of Gigafast speeds, its a gigabit hub.

I am not sure why the site is doing that when you go to look at Stream. Stream will be available to you and is probably a good option if you have high speed broadband.

Re: Gigafast with Sky hub 4.2

So the fibre in my area was only installed after Xmas and I would guess that not that many people have subscriberd to fibre to the property as of now in my area.

I have just checked what speeds Sky predict for homes on my street and the figures are 780-930Mb/s and guaranteed minimum 600Mb/s. So my average of 685Mb/s reported by Sky App is quite a way off I would say.

You can try contacting Sky via phone and complaining about the speed but I am sure they will tell you that your above the minimum so they cant do anything about it.

I think its important to keep in mind also that they are essentially renting the line from openreach for you so they would also have to convince Openreach that your line isnt performing to the correct standards even though its above the 600mbps figure.

@shandyman2010 you Sky  hub4.2 will pass up to 900Mb/s over its gigabit ethernet ports but given it only supports WiFi5 its speed over WiFi tops out around 700Mb/s. The newer white Sky Hub 6 supports WiFi6 so will allow up to 900Mb/s over WiFi assuming the device also supports WiFi6 or higher.

Whether this is an issue is down to the use you plan. For almost every app the maximum speed they can use is far lower than 700mb/s while you may see a minor increase in download speeds over WiFi that is far from certain as many server owners throttle high speed connections to allow more users to have access. The Hub4.2 fully supports the Sky Q boxes so they can act as WiFi extenders that facility is lost with the Hub 6.

You mention Sky Stream the maximum bandwidth the puck will use is around 35Mb/s with stability of the signal being actually more important. While the Sky WiiFi Max bundle comes with up to 3 extenders those extender pods are WiFi 5 devices.

In summary you are not missing much with the Hub4.2 if you want better home WiFi buying a third party whole home wifi kit msy be a better investment especially if you plan to switch to Stream.

@Chrisee

I think the bigger issue for OP is that the Sky checker is only showing 700mbps on the line check. So even using ethernet it would top out at 700mbps rather than 900 so its irrelevant which router they have.

Re: Gigafast with Sky hub 4.2

Spot on I know in my home using WiFi I will never get 900 but an Ethernet connection is limited to less than 700Mbps

@shandyman2010

I can understand your frustration, I would be a bit ticked off if my FTTP wasnt running at the max speed.

However I just dont really know what to suggest because Sky are within your contract terms. As I said, you can try calling Sky and telling them your ethernet speeds are lower than 900mbps but I just dont think they will entertain the issue.
