Full fibre engineer needs to drill into the wall

We are wanting to upgrade to full fibre but have recently had the house rendered and the engineer has said they need to screw two large holes into the render to hold the ladder which will then be left open after the installation. I do not want 2 large open holes in the front of my render. Of course the safety of the engineer is important I was just hoping there might be another way around it rather than drilling the holes into the render?

Re: Full fibre engineer needs to drill into the wall

When I had the dish installed many years ago by Sky engineer, they did drill 1 hole to secrure a strap betwen the ladder and wall. It was just 1 hole and I used exterior filler and painted over it..its invisible to the eye. If you still have some left over paint then it be no problem.

I recently had fibre installed from the street pole and it was a young lad contracted by Openreach.. This guy clearly was not scared of heights and did not bother to use any strap to secure against the wall. I did offer to hold the ladder but he said its no issues. You may get lucky and get a young lad like mine or a Openreach that will follow H&S guidelines

Oh I just remembered now...my neigbours opposite had a Openreach van with a lift that installed theirs. Not sure what the procedure is..but you may need to request that via Sky or Openreach

The young lad will be looking for new employment if they haven't followed mandatory safety working practices and the job gets audited (the presence or absence of tether holes being an easy thing to assess)

Corporate lawyers get distinctly humourless about potential Health and Safety Executive investigations.

Re: Full fibre engineer needs to drill into the wall

Yeah I have heard that some jobs are inspected for evidence of secured ladder. TBH I had no issues with the hole as I would have just used filler and painted over it. I get more  worried when these engineers create a new hole as they create a huge blowout on the exterior wall.

Not sure why my opposite neigbour got a lift to install theirs. It can't be their render as its not in great condition.
