Full fibre 500Mb Wifi speed

Hi there

I need some advice on addressing wifi speeds on my newly installed 500Mb full fibre.  Speed tests on my wifi (ookla on my phone) are very variable - generally the best is around 270Mb but frequently drops to 30-40Mb and various speeds in between.

The Sky tester says it is delivering 500Mb to the house, so this does seem like my wifi is the issue.  Logged into the router and the settings are all the Sky recommend settings as far as I can see.  Not too much scope to change channels. So I've left the settings alone.  The router is the one I had on my previous 60Mb broadband setup. I can't see that i'm getting interference from neighbouring wifi but I don't seem to have too much scope to manually swap channels anyway.

The fibre wall box is in my lounge fitted near my tv.  Consequently the router has moved from the hall to the lounge as well. Cabling means I can't move it too far from the tv just now. Tried various locations but it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference in regards to the usual interference/positioning advice.  A longer ethernet cable from the wall box to the router may be in order.

I have some smart speakers that i haven't turned off yet to see if they are consuming bandwidth.

Can I do anything to achieve nearer to 500Mb consistently on my wifi or should I consider reducing my fibre to 300Mb given that I can't get better than 270Mb on the wifi?  270Mb is plenty for my needs anyway (Sky stream and working from home).

Is there any value in running an ethernet cable from the router to the Sky Stream puck? I read it only supports up to 100Mbps. On wifi it reported I was getting 180Mbps. So aside from being more stable with a wired connection it would be slower. But I also read that the service only ever needs 30-40Mbps anyway?

Re: Full fibre 500Mb Wifi speed

@Bravo1Niner The main question is when you had the hub out in the hall was it all working good, the Full Fibre install and the move off the hub is all a major shock to the wireless Wi-Fi signal that was previously A OK, FF500 is good speed when the network is not busy, i have the same and lowest so far is 200Mb/s when the Network got real busy, so if you do go down to 300 expect a way lower value but that is up to you. Installer's just say yes stick the hub here it will be ok but they just have NO idea what they are causing, so choice is move the hub way better preferred or go down the Extender/Booster route and take that speed hit also...

Other way is to Mesh the system but you need to go work out what you require, and it is not a magic pill and all works as you think!
