Fttp mesh - what are my options

Hey,

New here but I have read a lot and I'm rather annoyed / confused.

I have sky ultrafast plus fftp circa 500 speeds. I am up for contract renewal in May but looking for a mesh system to cover my full home and some of the garden.ie node placement in conservatory.

From what I've read in order to connect direct to the open reach box I need a mesh that supports dhcp61 which I cannot find details about.

So my question is do I

- buy a mesh such as deco x55 and use as AP? But then does this work with wifi roaming? So connecting to strongest connection.

- buy a new router that has dhcp61 then overlay a mesh

- change to virgin is that I can use modem mode on router ?

Sorry if this has been asked a million times, I just can't seem to find options that I can relate to.

Using a mesh system in access point mode shouldn't impact mesh roaming capabilities, just make sure to disable the WIFI on the Sky router so you don't connect to that.

I have a Deco X55 system (3 nodes) in access point mode and roaming works as expected. I've been really impressed with the X55 system, as was also looking at far more expensive options.

@DLJ2205 can understand your needs which sound not disimilar to mine own. You can buy third party router mesh systems that will connect. Asus seem reliable and get recommended widely on the forum. Unfortunately the mass market systems like Google/ wifi, Amazon's eero system and TP-Links Deco offerings wont connect.

Given I wanted to keep the Sky land line and the only issue I had with the Sky hub was wifi range I bought a kit of 3 Deco M4 units set up in access point mode and turned off the wifi on the Sky hub. That gives me good whole home coverage with speeds of 500Mb/s down to 300Mb/s at worst  in a 3 level house and indeed gives decent speeds of 80Mb/s in the garden. Devices roam between base units without issues. Simple to set up and reliable but of course YMMV.

Re: Fttp mesh - what are my options

Thank you for the update, went ahead with buying the x60 3 pack.

all seemed to work great however when reconnecting my sky q and mini i found that there was a lot of stuttering on playback especially with my sky mini box.

did you have this issue and if so how did you fix it?

@DLJ2205 the Sky Q minis can only connect by wifi to the signal from a Sky hub or your main Sky Q box if the hub has its wifi turned off. The best option where practical is to connect these units by ethernet either directly to the hub or to one of your mesh satellites and turn off their wifi.

Where that is impossible then you need to separate the two 5GHz signals. On the Q boxes navigate to Settings but press 0,0,1 before select to open the engineers menu in which there is an option to switch from ch36 80MHz to ch36 40MHZ or ch44 40MHZ. Choose one of those and confirm the change. Then in the Deco app tell the system to optimise and it should move the 5GHz channel to avoid the Q signal.

Re: Fttp mesh - what are my options

Thank you, so connect via ethernet and disable WiFi on the q boxes along with the hub ?

Is that via the engineer menu?

Re: Fttp mesh - what are my options

So I tried direct ehternet to mini with WiFi off on main q mini q and hub.

Still had the same issue.

So we re triggered 5ghz on chanel 44 on main q and mini but still off at the hub. I disconnected the ethernet for the mini and it seems to have worked.

Time will tell I guess
