Re: Free upgrade

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone advise on my situation? Our connection stats look to be quite positive on initial glance, however multiple speed tests (on a variety of servers, although on WIfi) have seen speeds that reach around 30 Mbps down, 20 Mbps up.

I've yet to try a wired testScreen Shot 2019-02-10 at 14.33.48.png

The sticky post at the top of the forum explains how to find them.

Re: Free upgrade

@Teamlead your stats are fine you are connecting at the max possible speed.

@meus again your hub is syncing at a good speed slow speeds via  wifi are nothing to worry about just indicates the speed of your wifi network. Unless you cannot do something you need to do on a wifi device I would ignore the speedtests.

Re: Free upgrade

It can take upto 72 hours to kick in, I noticed a higher speed within about 48. Then you have to give it 10 days settling time. I've just contacted Sky myself because mine isn't hitting the hub at the guaranteed speed and I've someone coming to check it out on Thursday, but they won't do anything until the 10 days is up. Then if there own speed tester isn't hitting your hub at the correct speed they'll tell you to contact them. You may well see improvement  over the next ten days though. Keep an eye on your router stats too, that'll show what it's coming into the hub at.

Re: Free upgrade

@fatcobra Ok in that case what I did was this. I did wired tests, just my laptop nothing else plugged in via ethernet, I did 3 different tests on different speed test sites. Then I did the same on WIFI, and I took photos of all the results. Then I contacted Sky via the My Sky app and explained the issue, sent the photos and he tested my line etc from his end. I didn't have to do anything else, I'd already tried the reboot option before hand and he arranged for an engineer visit. He also said they'd refund this months payment as it hadn't hit the guaranteed minimum speed at the hub.

Re: Free upgrade

Since my upgrade 3 weeks ago, my speed has been below the minimum threshold, it’s only about a 3mb DL increase at present. I Spent all weekend painfully messaging someone on the VIP App, and I also now have an Engineer visit on Thursday and received some compensation.

Let's hope they can sort us both out eh. Good luck!

Re: Free upgrade

I started another thread earlier today about my issues and ust discovered this long running chat...

https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Broadband/Speed-Issue-WiFi-v-Wired-Ethernet-Connection/td-p/2964925

In short - got the free upgrade to 80mbs from 40mbs - prevoius wifi speed was 35 / 38mbs - new wifi speed 25mbs.

Changed the desired channel on the router and im now at 45mbs, well short of the 80mbs (77mbs connection at the router.)

I'm at max 10mbs quicker now than before the upgrade for WIFI speed - which falls short of the max figure.

On a wired connection, i can get the full 77mbs connection no problem.

I don’t buy this, if your getting at least 25mbs you should be able to do everything and not have any impact so don’t worry about speed test.. if im paying for this speed surely I should expect this speed, (even though the upgrade was free for me, it may of not been free historically for others)

Internet connections are not only about the streaming side of things, when downloading a big file, (lets use 4k content as an example,) the difference between a 25mbs connection and a 80mbs connection is vast.

What is holding back the wifi connection, is it the sky router ?

Thank you

Re: Free upgrade

@CharlotteAA

Please see @Chrisee's reply in your thread regarding WiFi. Interference is a major factor and the more homes that are built, the more people around, the more devices people get, the more people use these devices at a higher speed for downloading and streaming then the more its going to slow people down. That is just the fact of WiFi.

You'll also find that no ISP will guarantee WiFi performance so there is no 'falling short' of the max figure or 'paying for speed but not getting it' because you've already proved you are getting the speed by saying you get 77Mbps via ethernet - This is the speed that ISPs promise not WiFi. If you wish for a higher speed then please see my reply in your thread regarding using your own higher performance WiFi kit.

Re: Free upgrade

Yes my speed has more or less doubled. However as I was out of contract on Sky tv I cancelled and have gone to Freesat. My bill for broadband has now mysteriously gone from £33/month to £54/month!

In May I will be out of contract on the broadband so will be moving elsewhere.
