Faster connection but no faster download speeds

So I'm confused after searching just to speak to a real person which was difficult and trying to explain which is also difficult. 
So I'd like to see if anyone else has the same issue? When downloading a game on Steam on PC it will show your average download speed. First time on Fibre Broadband in my area I was with KCom and started off with Fibre 100, my download speed averaged between 7-9mbs, I then decided I wanted faster so upgraded to Fibre 300 and now my average download speed was between 26-29mbs. Now I've moved to sky fibre 500 but my download speed is exactly the same between 26-29. I thought my having a faster connection also meant faster download speed also, so to me I'd expect between 46-49mbs but this is not the case as the adviser says I'm getting the speed to my hub and doesn't mean to my devices, I'm feeling ripped off?

Also when I check my app it says I'm getting 500 but no soon as I start to download and check again it then says I'm getting less than 300. This can't be right? Can anyone help and thank you in advance

@Ady721 first point is you look to be confusing units Steam shows speeds in MegaBytes per second (MB/s) while Sky and other ISPs  measure speeds in Megabits per second(Mb/s) there are 8 bits in a Byte so 30MB/s is 240Mb/s.

In simple terms your download speed is set by the slowest part of the transfer which could be the speed that Steam's server allows, the connection to your hub and the home network connection from the hub to your device. If you are using a gigabit Ethernet connection between your hub and device then that will notbe the slowest part but if you are using WiFi it is the most likely culprit.

WiFi speeds do not necessarily increase when you increase your broadband speed and are mainly determined by the layiut of your home and how it is built as WiFi signals lose power when passing through solid objects like walls the denser the object the more power lost. While it is possible to get 500Mb/s in every room using WiFi you will need to buy your own WiFi kit to do that as a Sky hub even with extenders will struggle - the speed guarantee with WiFiMax add-on is 25Mb/s. Ethernet is the fastest connection  and more importantly the one with the lowest latency.

@Ady721 And also if Steam has pegged out at the 300Mb/s ie 30MB/s you have at least some overhead to play with, not happy with it then Steam is where you go then see if they can check at there end what the tie up with the throughput is on there server!

Thank you for your reply and I understand a lot of factors can result in lower speeds but my main question was if I'm getting a faster connection should I also get faster download speeds as I'm seeing no improvement from 300 to 500 but understand the points you have made, I'm using WiFi but I'll have to try a wired connection and see if there's any difference

@Ady721 Wired is the way to go for sure, at least you can easily get the 50MB/s maxed out speed to the PC/Hub connection, 500Mb/s takes very precise control and a good network setup on a wireless wifi to do it all!

If you run a speed test from your PC you will get the peak speed over wireless, sustained throughput is way harder to keep going!

Use netspot as at least they do shove a fair amount off data down and speedtest.net have it installed on your PC to test, the web version is just not true!
