Extend master socket or use extension?

Hi,

my new SKY Q router is currently plugged into the master BT Socket but it is situated in a secluded corner of an extension and as such my wifi is a tad slow.

There is an extension phone port which sits in a much more central and open area of my downstairs. Can I plug my broadband directly into this? This would actually allow me to connect ethernet to my to box which I would prefer!

If this is not suitable would it be better to run a longer (5 metre) cable between the master socket and the router? If so...which cable?

Thanks

@DanstanthemanYou would be better if you could get a longer rj11 to rj11 cable so that you can move the router. It is better than trying to use an extension port within the property.

Thanks @Highlinder . I know with audio cables there are better quality ones... is this the same with the rj11 cables!

@DanstanthemanI would shop around for one, but try keep the length down to what you need as the more you add the distance does increase.

@Danstantheman

As @Highlinder has mentioned, a longer RJ11 cable would be best. I have used a six meter one in the past without any issue to speed or connection.

I think I got mine from Amazon, wasn't expensive if I recall.

Re: Extend master socket or use extension?

Hi

On this topic; currently, my master socket and router is in the same small room as my TV, but is on the opposite wall and I want to move it so that all my media hardware is together. Although it is a very small distance between the two walls, I would need to run the cable over a door frame and around the skirting so that it's not just trailing across the room.

From what I've seen, I can use an RJ11 extension cable to connect the router to the master socket so that I can move it, and I think that 10metres will do it. Can someone confirm if this is all I need to do please?

Thanks very much in advance for any advice.

Re: Extend master socket or use extension?

That's exactly what I have done using a 10m cable and don't notice any difference.

That should work without issue @Thea-Belle
