Ethernet ports (hard wired) not working on PC

I transferred from Talk Talk full fibre a week ago and now my computer will not connect to some sites via ethernet cable (ok on the same sites when using Wifi). Sky have sent me a new router which turned out to have the same issue.. I have had all my hardware checked and stress tested, including the cableage it's self all  are confirmed.

In the short time i have been with Sky I have spent hour on the phone with them trying to resolve this

Problem, even though their operatives have been polite and helpfull, I still have this problem.. The last conversation has left me believing they want to deflect the cause onto problem onto my set-up. It was fine with TalkTalk problem only occured when Sky took over. Is anyone else having a connection problem like this.?

Best Regards

 Andy.

@Andy458 while it is possible to have one hub with faulty ethernet ports to have two is very unlikely. There are no settings on the hub which could cause the issue and your's is not an issue we see reported in the forum. I would check the network settings especially check the IP4 address which should be in thecrange 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254 and thecgateway has to be 192.168.0.1 as if you are still using the settings for Talk Talk thst would explain the issue.

@Andy458

As @Chrisee indicates, by default a typical current TalkTalk router issues addresses in a different IP range (192.168.1.2-254 / 255.255.255.0 ) to a Sky Hub which would result in an incompatibility if they are being retained.

Re: Ethernet ports (hard wired) not working on PC

Hi chrisee,

Thank you for your reply, nothing has been retained from the Talk Talk set-up, Just checked and they are in the range you have suggested.

My brother inlaw has sky (white router) my Pc (ethernet connection works great on his set-up).. Given the circumstances (all the checks i have done at my end, hardware, set-up and cableage) i am left with the impression there could be an issue with the firmware on rhe Routers Sky have supplied me. Like i say the ethernet connection of my PC works fine on my brother in-laws sky connection, SKY have suggested they can't do anymore for me.. currently at an impasse.. you thoughts/suggestions  would be very much appreciated.

@Andy458 honestly your theory of a firmware issue is very unlikely Sky supply literally millions of these units and if there was an issue with the etherrnet ports it would be affecting far more than your set up and the forum would be innundated. These kind of issues can be frustrating to find and you end up kicking yourself as almost always something silly and I speak from experience..

Step through the connection carefully starting at the PC ensure that the network settings are set so the device gets the addresses from the hub to avoid any issues with the PC using an address another device is trying to use. If you must have a fixed IP address ensure that has been reserved on the hub first. Two devices with the same IP address may explain the issue. Beyond that if there are any switches etc between the hub and the pc check they are powered and working properly. Lastly try another port on the hub. Beyond that

Re: Ethernet ports (hard wired) not working on PC

Hi Chrisee,

I'm sure they do... though i suspect a large majority use Wi-fi to connect to the internet.  I let the sky hub set it's self up.. these things are susposed to be plug and play i believed.. i have already checked, and double check the peripheral.. I will recheck.. in the mean time can you suggesy why my hardware work fine on my brother in-laws Sky connection.  Thank you for your assistance greatly appreciated.

@Andy458 Would logon to your account, have a look at your products and goto the Broadband Shield, set it to disabled, allow a day or so for it to all filter through and see what happens!

Re: Ethernet ports (hard wired) not working on PC

@Andy458 If you have the sky Broadband Hub the black one, and you are not to much out off the box with it, would try a quick Full Factory reset on it, when i came back to sky Mar 2025 got sent a used refurbed SR203, did not care to much as i kept it on the connection only for six weeks, had no issues with it, but as a used item you have NO idea off the history for it, My original SR was on from 2019 - 2024 continuous with zero breaks! There has been a couple FW updates recently, but the Forum would be swamped if that was causing all kinds off issues hub wise!

@Andy458 most likely because there is no IP address conflict on his network unlike your's. Ethernet iis plug and play until a setting is misconfigured when it sulks. It is vanishingly unlikey you have had two dud hubs when there are many million working properly.

Re: Ethernet ports (hard wired) not working on PC

Hi Chrisee,

You are clearly a techi savy person, i'm not so.  I let my router do the setting up which i believe (again excuse me) is the way plug and play should work, are you saying it doesn't?

I haven't changed any settings on my any of my peripheral.

Facts.

• Everything worked fine when I plugged in my Talk Talk router (years ago mind you) and it continued to work fine throughout the years

• Issues started when I swapped over to Sky. From The start I had full functionality via Wifi however not from the ethernet ports..

•  Brother in-laws set-up was plug and play and he didn't need to change any settings (mind you he does have the white router, sorry again I don't know the model code). I have already checked what you have kindly suggested, no fix just yet... Should I ask Sky to send me the white router. Which appears to be a solution (bear in mind I not really tech savy, however i'm able to follow your instructions). Thank you once again, or maybe you think i should go back to Talk Talk.

Regards

Andy
