Drop in Wifi Speed after upgrade from 150 to 300Mbps

We have Fibre to the property. Earlier this week, we upgraded from 150 to 300 Mbps, and since the upgrade, our Wifi (even adjacent to the SR203 router) has been very poor, with speeds of 30 to 40 Mbps. Before the upgrade, it was a constant 140 to 150 Mbps in most of the house with Wifi (we live in an old house and have no internal brick walls. We have tried unplugging the router for 10 minutes to reset it, but no difference. We have a Netgear router in an outbuilding (H/W to the Sky router), and with this, we can get 300 Mbps via Wifi no problem.

After talking with the Sky customer service, they advised to wait for two weeks while the line undergoes self-testing and set-up. My understanding is that this does not alter the Wifi but only the inbound Fibre connection - is this correct?

Can anyone advise on this, please, as this is extremely disappointing and frustrating, as I have been talking to Sky customer service about the upgrade for weeks, and now it looks like it is still not working correctly.

@davethebb How is the netgear connected and wired to the sky hub, if you get full speed at it, then there is nothing wrong with the speed upgrade that you did from the 150 to 300.

Jim 1, we have 300 Mbps at both the Netgear and Sky router. The Netgear router is connected to the Sky router via an Ethernet cable. Before the upgrade, we had 150 Mbps wireless at both the Sky and Netgear routers. It appears the upgrade has made the Sky router drop it's wireless speed.

@davethebb What statement are we going with as they both cannot be correct! What sky hub do you have the Sr203 or the (SR213 sky max).... You are getting wireless speeds fine with the netgear wired wan to lan on the SR, and lower speeds at the SR standalone.

Are they both using the same name? and as a quick test have you switched off the Netgear and only tested the SR by itself?

Your 150 to 300 speed upgrade has worked 100% as you have proven, so just need to work out if your wireless is still latched to the netgear when trying to test which will make the speed a lot lower due to distance, but switching it off takes it out off the picture for the test....

Re: Drop in Wifi Speed after upgrade from 150 to 300Mbps

Jim1,

We have the SR2023 router in the house connected to the fibre incoming connection. The Netgear is located in a workshop 40 m from the house and is thermally insulated and 100% airtight with taped 100 mm PIR insulation. The Netgear wifi does not extend externally to the workshop. I will, however, disconnect the Netgear in the morning and run another set of tests to see if it makes any difference, and come back and let you know.

@davethebb Do you also have the same ssid/password for both the SR203 and the Netgear hub's to save you swaping about connections as you go from point A to B. And have you also split the bands or just the one name used.

Trying to find if on Netgear it likes the 5Ghz band and full 300Mb/s is no issue, and then when you get to the SR drops to the 2.4Ghz band which by the norm will be down about 70Mb/s and speed testing around that value. No easy way to see that with the hub, but netspot wifi analyser will show you the locked band on a mobile phone device.

Very detailed speed test below if you wish to use.

Re: Drop in Wifi Speed after upgrade from 150 to 300Mbps

Jim1, No I have different WiFi names and passwords for the Sky and Netgear routers. Interestingly the speed over wifi seems to be improving - it is now 90 Mb/s. Both routers are set up for both frequencies.

Re: Drop in Wifi Speed after upgrade from 150 to 300Mbps

@davethebb If i am reading your reply correctly, then mobile on the 2.4Ghz ssid, expect a speed test around the 50-60Mb/s to be returned, when you change and connect on the 5Ghz ssid, then expect to get anywhere from 200-300Mb/s. Testing wireless wi-fi is difficult unless you have all other wireless devices off, or you know that they are quite not doing anything and do behave themselves at all times.
