Crazy latency spike in the evening

Hi Guys

Been a customer of Sky FTTP since end of April but now regretting the move TBH.

I have no issues with Wi-Fi as I use my own router but my son has been complaining about internet on few occasions. At 1st I though maybe the odd issue but when I checked the graph, it has this pattern weekday evening  maybe once or twice a week. Does not happen on weekends though but only on weekday evenings.

Its not noticeable for normal internet use but when he is playing online gaming...that latency spike is affecting his game play.

Anyone experienced something similar and any solution ? Speaking to SKy customer service was the usual..reset router.

@Sayek Looking like congestion, run the speed checker before in a good time so you have a base gives you a lot off info, then when you hit peak do the same, especially for the packet loss and the upstream side, see what you can gleam from it!. Also is the gaming, wired/wireless and what type off device, latency is not that bad, packet loss will be your killer especially on wireless!

Re: Crazy latency spike in the evening

Appreciate your replay @JimM1

His room been using powerline since we had Virgin Media 5+ years ago.  Never had any issues with the powerline while Virgin Media. I have even gone and replaced the powerline a week ago but yesterday there were screams while playing his games 🤐

I honestly though the move to Openreach FTTP would be improved over Virgin Media Coaxial cables.

The strange part is, most of the surrounding residents are on cheaper Community Fibre but part of the road is not serviced by them so Openreach provide the service. You think Openreach FTTP would be less congested due to having fewer customers🙄

Can Openreach do anything at the exchange if I make a lot of noise with Sky. My son is saying its been bad since the switch late April.

To the average user at home its not really a problem, but the main reason to switch from Virgnin Media was in hope of better latency for his gaming..but its had the opposite effect.

@Sayek Go for it sky may wish to see what is going on, better dig there hub out and connect it though! You may wish to also see that your own Router has not been updated or needs it so worth a check, Asus just did all there's early this week went full https and "trusted root certification authorization" to boot what a bunch off plonks with an advisory you must do a full Factory Reset on the router, jesus like that's going to happen now!

Re: Crazy latency spike in the evening

@JimM1 For the lat couple days i have plugged the Sky black router back, turned off the Wi-Fi and using my TP link as access point.

When contacted Sky service for some help, the kind lady asked me to send a picture of rear of router to make sure I had correctly connected the cable from ONT to the Sky router WAN port after a pin hole reset. At this point I woke up and realised the chat was going no where and ended the call.

Silly question but will changing my  TP-Link router improve the situation or is this issue a local netowrk congestion?? I need a fix because ASAP as can't carry on like this for the remaining 21 months of the contract.

Re: Crazy latency spike in the evening

@Sayek Had a quick look through all your post's, could not establish what you have, how you have it all connected and what you are doing with it all, so advise becomes just to hard, but just assuming now your mesh is wan - lan connected, you are either wireless routing or AP restricting on the TP, and your SR203 black hub that i think you have from sky is wireless off, and only routing on the Lan to your mesh!

Tp-Links do a good job, mesh is reasonable but you do need to take a look see now and again!

Re: Crazy latency spike in the evening

Hi @JimM1

From 2nd day I had TP-Link AX73 connected direct to the ONT set as a ROUTER and IPV6. Sky black hub was just disconnected .

Also have a Powerline connected from AX73 to 1st floor bedroom to sons PC.

About 2 weeks ago I decided to replace the TP-Link AX73 router with TP-Link Deco X50 2 node Mesh. And also replaced the Poweline. Again the Deco X50 is connected direct to the ONT and Sky router not in use. Thought maybe the AX73 is getting a bit tired.

But the congestiopn in the evening happened 2 days on the X50. It was then I decided to check the broadband quality graph and noticed its a regular thing.

On the day of creating this post, decided to connect the Sky router back, disable its Wi-Fi and Deco X50 set as ACCESS POINT. Powerline is also connected to the Sky router and the Deco X50 is just dealing with Wi-Fi. Its early days  to find out if that has cured the issue.

I really don't mind leaving the Sky router connected if there is no further drama with the internet. The Deco X50 is from Amazon so not sure if I sure return it and puchase a different hardware. I don't have any issues spending upto £250 for hardware that would solve the issue. The Sky router range is pretty bad in the rear kitchen and upstairs bedroom, so i must have something else to boost the range

@Sayek You just need to go look and buy decent hardware if you wish to try and push the envelope!
