Connecting to router via LAN

I am trying to connect my loft PC running windows 7 to my Sky router.  The cable connection is via powerline adapters  When I try and connect the  routerSky name displays but when I enter the correct password it tries to connect but then the screen displays an error message 651.  I have tried both sockets at the rear of the router with the same  result.  The routers recognises that a cable has been connected, because it flashes green.  Whats happening?.

@28jay02

Is that a wired or a wireless connection into the PC?  Ethernet shouldn't require a password.

Incidentally, Windows 7 isn't particularly safe to provision with an internet connection because it's no longer patched by Microsoft.

@28jay02 you dont need a password to connect via an ethernet port it should be literally plug and play. Are you sure you are trying the correct network adapter check the network properties for the ethernet port? The other possible issue is to check that your two powerline adapters are not talking to each other?

Windows 7 is getting very old and is no longer fully supported but MS are still issuing security updates this year which you should apply if going online. From 2023 you are on your own.

Only by paying an Extended Support Update fee, so typically Enterprise customers, not home users.  The 2023 date is for ESU to finish: domestic support ended in 2020.

Re: Connecting to router via LAN

I had a Sky Router failure on the 8th September.  I now have the same issue adn my Win10 toubleshoorter showed Error 651.  My WIndows 10 PC sees the connection and I have a green tick for  Broadband connection, however it shows it as disconnected? Before the new router delivery I simply had to plug and play Ethernet inot my old Sky Router for a very fast service? The new router Wifi is working fine for all other devices in the house including Wifi extenders.  It is only the Ethernet connection that is showing the error.  I have checked all Drivers ets etc.  All are the latest and correct. I have tried all Ethernet ports on thr outer - none work with the PC. MY WIn!0 says the netowrom adapter is working as it shoudl and th drvier si the  harwARright drvier. **bleep** Sky?  I have run all the advised CMD prompts to fix the issue.  No joy. Maybe it a coincidence and I have a hardware adapter adapter/driver problem on the PC that means the PC thinks no driver is installed?
