Cannot get fibre despite being told I can?

This is actually on behalf of my mum, who is in her 80's, but loves her phone, netflix, iPad etc.... and she wanted to get fibre when she was ready (she had to deal with a house alarm which was connected to the analog phone line and some other bits first)

City Fibre ran fibre to her whole street at least 2 years ago (if not longer) in an Aberdeen suburb - she's got the small duct cap on the pavement at the edge of her property as does everyone on her street - which is a normal street, one house next to another - no funny driveways or lengthy paths etc.... there is even a fibre street cabinet that she can see from her living room window!

Her neighbours either side of her have fibre, and a few more around the street too (you can tell by the box on the wall) - and upon ordering fibre last week it said she was eligible (as we expected) and we submitted the order

Cue the following day, she gets notification that her install has been cancelled (with no notification I should add other than a text to say there is a problem and the order was cancelled - she tried to call the number - but the automated system is not great for someone who is hard of hearing!!)

After some back and forth and me calling in on her behalf - apparently the order is rejected due to "incompatibility" (the sky agent we spoke to said they tried 6 different ways to submit the order and they all failed with this same "incompatible" message).

Moving on to yesterday, after some further digging - I went on the BT Openreach checker (someone suggested that is the official standard to check if you can get fibre - I dunno??) - and low and behold, it reports she cannot get fibre currently, but you put other street numbers in on the same road (including a direct next door neighbour) and they all can get fibre - with the exception of her and one other property in the street that I have found so far.

The cynic in me thinks that City Fibre (who's lines they are) might be at capacity in the area and us ordering has triggered them blocking off anyone that hasnt already ordered fibre in the street - but obviously thats an assumption?

And of course - now we are at the point of Sky telling us we need to speak to City Fibre - and City Fibre telling us they dont talk to end users and she needs to speak to Sky!?!?!?

So where do we go from here - there is fibre at the edge of her property, we know its there - she had all the cold callers at the door and postcards delivered when City fibre were doing the construction works - but because her address is now showing as not being able to get fibre (it was before we ordered - as we were able to order!!) - she's kinda stuck!

Did I say she is in her 80's and on her own - just wondered if there was any "safeguarding/care of the elderly" things she could lean on to get things moving to resolve?

Any ideas folks?

Important to note that the BT Wholesale Availability Checker doesn't have visibility of CityFibre infrastructure: it only knows about Openreach deployment.

What's the current broadband speed arriving at the address?

The Universal Service Obligation is a whole 10Mbs

Re: Cannot get fibre despite being told I can?

They must have some tie in these days - as BT checker confirms her neighbours are viable for fibre (and already have it - maybe OR have taken ownership of these???)

To give a sense of what Im speaking about - without giving too much info... this is the street and two of these houses cant apparently get fibre (you can see the fresh tarmac on the pavement from the fibre runs put in by City Fibre)

Re: Cannot get fibre despite being told I can?

Yeah she gets around 25/30mb down on FTTC at present - she was only looking at a 100mb fibre deal from Sky (she doesnt need any more)

There is no real rush - other than the eventual copper switch off, but she decided it was time to get it done - I guess at least we now know there is an issue and there wont be some mad panic when the copper switch off does happen - so hopefully we will get it resolved.

I should add - really not angry or upset about it, just interested to see how we get it resolved

I have also mentioned to her that she should probably check in with Sky to ensure the FTTC cease doesnt go through - because I can quite believe it may do (I work for an IT MSP - been there many times in the past).

Re: Cannot get fibre despite being told I can?

Aha - I have found someone in a similar situation on another forum - and I need to request Sky to raise an ORDI (OpenReach Data Integrity) check against my details to ensure they are correct.

Fingers crossed - I'm sure this wont be a quick thing 😄

Re: Cannot get fibre despite being told I can?

@PaulAdam76 Use the sky checker, that is all that is important for them to the address! With a CF CityFibre connection and if sky are going with that as the Primary then OR connection is out the window! Also been moved away to the accessibility part on the Forum for some reason!

Re: Cannot get fibre despite being told I can?

@PaulAdam76 Hope it all goes well, get's mighty confusing with the OR/CF and what way sky is swing at the time! And not to mention any RED Flags that can be thrown up in the path such as the medical side / alarms and NOT having the second means of emergency calling!

Re: Cannot get fibre despite being told I can?

Thankfully her alarm is just a house alarm with a speech dialer - not a medical one - we just needed it upgraded to do IP signalling instead of calling out on the land line - thats in hand.

We have made contact with Sky, OpenReach and City Fibre - asking each of them to check their databases for errors and respond - I doubt we are going to get anything meaningful back - but I live in hope 🙂

Re: Cannot get fibre despite being told I can?

@PaulAdam76 If it is sky then that is all you deal with, nothing to do with OR/CF they will not have anything to do with you apart from say, contact your ISP you are/will be a sky customer and NOT a OR/CF in anyway!

Re: Cannot get fibre despite being told I can?

and there is our problem - Sky customer service are telling us to contact Openreach and/or City Fibre to resolve the problem 😄

I know they will both likely tell us to take a running jump - but no harm in trying in any case 🙂
