Can the openreach box and router be turn off (unplugged) for any period of time

Yes: you just won't have any internet connection through them.

 

Conceivably a period of months is not ideal, because then a router might miss two or more successive software updates.

Thank you it would only be for up to two weeks or while work is carried out and the Internet would not be needed at the property.

If unplugging and removing the ONT, remember that the optical pigtail cable and green fibre jack plug is rather fragile, and needs to be kept free from dust: you definitely don't want it just hanging on a skirting board.
