Can I use Vodafone Ultra Hub 6E on my Sky broadband

I've just moved to Sky broadband (500Mbs) from Vodafone (200Mbs), but now experience horrible blocking on TV streaming with the Sky Hub WiFi. With Vodafone I had a Ultra Hub 6E with WiFi Extender 6E, so could connect TV etc by Ethernet to the WiFi extender.

Can I use the Vodafone Ultra Hub/extender on Sky broadband? If yes which credentials do I need to obtain from Sky and how best to configure?

Alternatively, any suggestions to upgrade the WiFi experience at little to no extra cost?

openreach fibre access comes in under the stairs, so that's where the router goes - near fuse box, washer dryer, ironing board etc. so not at all ideal for WiFi - but the Vodafone 6E WiFi was perfect.

thanks

Re: Can I use Vodafone Ultra Hub 6E on my Sky broadband

Pretty sure the Vodafone kit will be of no use. So the lowest cost option is going to be ethernet cable.

Best bet would be to run a cable from the ONT to wherever the Sky router would provide the best coverage. That just needs to be cat5e or above & can run up to 100m.

If you don't want to run a cable, then you may be able to do it with powerline adapters, but that's obviously at a cost & may restrict the 500Mb you're paying for.

If it's only the TV affected, you could leave the router where it is & just run a cable or powerline to that.

Re: Can I use Vodafone Ultra Hub 6E on my Sky broadband

Thanks, and I'm guessing you are probably right about the Vodafone kit.

BTW - this is what ChatGPT4o say

Sky Broadband Authentication

Sky Broadband requires a DHCP Option 61 (Client ID), sometimes called a “username and password.”

Obtain these credentials:

You can generate the details from your Sky router (search online for how to extract them) or contact Sky support.

Credentials typically look like: abcd1234@skydsl|1234xxxx.

Input the DHCP Option 61 in the Vodafone Ultra Hub settings:

Log in to the Ultra Hub admin interface.

Navigate to Internet Settings.

Locate DHCP Option 61 and input the Client ID.

WAN Configuration

Ensure the correct WAN settings:

Connection Type: PPPoE or Dynamic IP (DHCP). Use DHCP for Sky.

VLAN ID: Sky often requires a VLAN ID of 101. If the Ultra Hub supports VLAN tagging, enable it and input this ID.

MTU: Set to 1500 (default) or as recommended by Sky.

That's based on outdated information: one of the risks of AI-generated material.  In addition, Sky support doesn't provide help with using non-Sky hardware.

Thanks

Totally agree about the flaws of  Gen AI...

So are you saying that basically I am stuck with the Sky hub then? I mean if Sky intentionally deny the user access to credentials and configurations that would allow a different router to be used, and won't share with me my credentials, then I will give up..

But I would have thought that Ofcom would expect broadband providers to allow users to choose their preferred routers and have access to set them up to be compatible.

thanks again for any assistance, advice or experience on this matter.

No you're not stuck with the Sky Hub.

ASUS for one support the required authentication protocol. But that certainly won't fit in with the "little to no cost"!

The generic credentials in the next line work just fine (as long as the hardware is compatible) : there's nothing to 'extract' from the Sky Hub.  Online instructions for using Wireshark to examine the handshake are long out of date.

Re: Can I use Vodafone Ultra Hub 6E on my Sky broadband

Just to thank you both for the tips and advice. Update, I found a pair of old Tenda AV1000 P3 powerlines I had  not being used and have set that up with an old router as an Ethernet switch, and so I now have stable internet (about 60Mbs) to all 4 devices LGTV, PS5, Sky Puck and Apple TV. Wi-Fi as a back up. Proper gigabit switch on order. Will sell the Vodafone kit on eBay - see similar selling for about £70 😱

thanks again.
