Can I get better upload speeds from Sky?

Hiya,

I have download speeds about 70mbp but upload is only 15mbp, I need an upload of 70mbp to be able to work from home.

Virgin and Hyperoptic are not available in my area. Is there anyway to get this 15mbp increased? Can I pay for it, set up my home network differently etc

@londongal91 To get an upload speed of 70mbps you would need to subscribe to full fibre 900, to see if that's available to you have a look on the Sky website or see if you can check via the Sky app.

15Mbs upload on 70Mbs download is as expected for good FTTC (which has an inherent maximum of 80:20Mbs)

All Openreach domestic broadband is hugely asymmetrical: this is essentially to preserve the market for much higher priced 'business' products.

As @daveNOS indicates, only 900Mbs FTTP has an upload speed above 50Mbs.

Incidentally you'd have to be doing something fairly specialist to require 70Mbs to work from home: as indicated by the comments above it's not something most broadband provision can cater for.

Thanks. Unfortunately it seems that I am on the fastest broadband I can get for my area. However it is suggesting WiFi Max, do you think that will increase my upload speed?

Promo says "You're already on our fastest available broadband speed. Add WiFi Max and you’ll get fast WiFi in every room too. Plus advanced security and support" but additionally the graphic says "Our fastest WiFi guarantee"

No: inbound and outbound speed is almost entirely dependent on the broadband type supplying the address and (for FTTC) the line distance to the local fibre cabinet.  As I noted above, in the UK the maximum upload speed for FTTC on a perfect circuit is 20Mbs: that's a hard limit imposed by the technology.

To get faster upload on an Openreach circuit you'd have to look at high end business broadband ('leased line') solutions, not the re-badged domestic broadband which Sky and other ISPs offer,  and these are both limited in availability and unpleasantly expensive.

Virgin don't have a domestic product with that upload speed at all: where you will most commonly find it is from altnet full fibre providers who frequently offer symmetrical connectivity.

I'd emphasise again that on the national network 70Mbs outbound is only achievable on 900Mbs or faster FTTP, so is really quite rare for domestic broadband in the UK and would be a significant restriction on recruiting staff for any business which insisted upon it.

It would be a high requirement for an employer to say you need 70mbps upload for WFH as there isnt a large proportion of the UK that can even get 70mbps upload yet.
