Can I ACTUALLY get Ultrafast?

I  moved to a small rural village in April and was told I couldn't have fibre broadband via BT, Sky or Virgin etc. as no fibre runs to the village, so I have been making do, using other means of internet connectivity, but now need to find a decent speed broadband service.

On Googling what's available for me, I came across Sky, which when I put in my postcode, said I could have Superfast, Ultrafast etc. broadband! I found this hard to believe so phoned up Sky's customer services and after giving my postcode, it was confirmed that Sky CAN bring fibre to my cottage.

I asked my neighbours and no one has Sky for their broadband, which made me question again if this information is indeed correct? Has something changed since April when I was told I couldn't have it? Or is this just a means to rope you in - and then let you down when they find out you can't actually have it?

I know when I call customer services that most of the time I am talking to someone reading off a standard information sheet, so I am afraid I still don't feel confident that I have been told the truth as to what is possible (call me cynical).

If an engineer would call and tell me it was possible, I'd do it in a heartbeat, but the fact you have to join/subscribe to the contract and PAY an amount upfront to set things in motion, all in good faith that the information is correct, concerns me as whilst I am sure as with all these things that there will be a 14 day cooling off period, I also know that it can take longer than that to have things in place enough to know if you do want out - and then what? I also suspect getting money back ain't gonna be easy.

So I am trying to establish UPFRONT if someone can put my mind at rest here regarding my connective possibilities... or not with Sky.

Thanks.

Search internet for openreach broadband checker - if you enter your postcode on this facility it will tell you what infrastructure is in place and potential line speeds to your property

Yep. WBC FTTP is full fibre to the premises with an over head feed and 1 stage install meaning that it should be around 9 days to install.

Just to cover all eventualities you mentioned your cottage. Is this a listed building although it shouldn't make a difference as presumably the overhead fibre would follow the same route as your existing copper line

Also bear in mind if this fibre optic has just been rolled out by openreach sky can be slow on getting hold of the database

Also just noticed the speed is up to 330Mbps as opposed to 1Gbps . This usually means it may be fttp on demand as part of a rural fibre network

@Skull+Treaty

@Highlinder

Any ideas on the 330Mbps limitation. Is this something to do with the exchange or fttp on demand.  I assume @ADWillow would still be able to order through sky

Re: Can I ACTUALLY get Ultrafast?

I am in rented accommodation but I don't believe it's listed. I haven't been told it is...

There is actually a satellite dish on the wall, from a previous tenant, so I doubt it.

Doesn't fttc also list 330 ?
I thought it changed to 1000 when fttc was enabled ? Could be wrong though

I don't now what that means in real (layman's) terms. ie. how what you said might affect me.

Bottom line is, I think you are saying that I CAN have the Ultrafast 145mb/s broadband is that correct?

And that it might take a while to install even though it should only be about 9 days?

Do I have this right?
