Broadband to flats

Hi, 

just moved into a flat there are 7 flats in total. Virgin said they cannot install broadband due to height restriction/unserviceable although there is a virgin point on the main road outside the building. 

I am now opting for sky and would they install a new connection? There is no infrastructure in place all I can see is there is a cable running from a telephone pole to the building, I assume it feeds broadband and telephone to the commercial shop on ground floor. Would sky use this to run of into the flat ? Would they run cables all the way round the outside of the building into the flat? I'm confused how this will all work out as I need internet for work. your help much appreciated

@007aj Sky use the Openreach phone network to deliver broadband.  It would be a very unusual block of flats including new build if there wasn't already either a master phone socket or provision for full fibre in each flat. I would check with the building manager as to what is in place.

Unfortunately when you enter the address it canny Locate a connection if new build. Which is the case 

the question is can sky /openreach run cables from the telephone pole into the flat ?

@007aj talk to the developer or the agent as they should have installed the required Openreach infrastructure in the block as part of the build. However they may have an exclusive deal with a different network provider or indeed own their own as Persimmons do in these cases there will be a restriction on having other networks connected.

New builds almost always have access to full fibre broadband as part of the build as it is becoming as necessary as connecting to the power grid.

Unfortunately after speaking to the building owner there is nothing in place 

And he wasn't aware of having infrastructure in place.

That would be a fairly major omission on the part of the developer.

@007aj due to the developer not doing the necessary you will have problems ordering a line. Check the new address is registered with  Royal Mail as until that is done Openreach have no way of knowing it exists see https://www.royalmail.com/find-a-postcode.

In theory they will install a new line but how it would be routed is unknown until an engineer comes out and inspects the property. It maybe worth talking to any other residents to see what they have done. Call Sky and see what they suggest.

Even if the address is registered with Royal Mail openreach still have no way to know there has been a property built, the developer should have contacted openreach direct to have a new sites representative assigned to arrange for the infrastructure to be added 

if the area is not full fibre then it can be submitted for a survey once added to Royal Mail as a new address but if there is full fibre the survey will fail and would have to go back to the developer

there is no fibre in the area 

I spoke to sky they said for the landlord to contact openreach and will see what happens but I have a feeling we will be without internet for a months

Yeah it's a pain when the telephone lines are not planned in advance as part of the build, fingers crossed the have made provisions for the internal fit so it won't take as long or be as intrusive
