Broadband speeds up before Engineer visit

We have had terrible wifi speeds ever since we switched to full fibre 500. At that time the sky hub was moved away from the centre of the house to near an outside wall. It was the same model of hub as before although he did replace it like for like as it wasn't getting the speeds he expected.

I finally got round to booking an Engineer to come look at it last week as my wife and I WFH and we were beginning to sound like robots on conference calls. 2 days before the Engineer arrived, the hub rebooted and we had speeds we have never seen before! It went from 20mbps to 230mbps! It was ace. I nearly cancelled the visit as the problem was finally solved. My wife suggested we still speak to him and see if he can figure out the cause and give us some good 1-2-1 human interaction. Which he did and it was great. Happy with the Engineer.

Over the weekend the hub rebooted again. And now we are back to the speeds we were suffering from before. It's back to 20mbps!

If the wifi can achieve 230mbps why does it only achieve it when we have an engineer booked?

Hi @JezSmedley

I suspect its the hub hopping WiFi channels when it reboots. Have you tried doing manual reboots to see if it hops channels again and your speeds improve? It wont have anything to do with engineer visits.

Re: Broadband speeds up before Engineer visit

Thanks Jamesn123. I'll check it later. We have conf calls during office hours so I will do it this evening when there is less impact. There's never a good time to reboot the hub! LOL

I dont know why it rebooted 2 days before and 2 days after the visit. I'll check the channel then restart then check again. We did consider wifi max but it is additional cost and we have now seen what our hub is capable of when it is working 100%.

@JezSmedley

Can be various reasons for it to reboot. Sky may have initiated diagnostics/reboots when you booked the engineer as a troubleshooting step, the hub may have had a firmware update, or just needed a reboot.
