Broadband speed "no problems" at 12 mbps?!

I'm trying to assist my friend. Their broadband is awful in one bedroom - they thought the WiFi coverage was poor. Speed test revealed 12.1mbps down / 1.2mbps up. I installed an expensive power line adapter - communication between the PlayStation and router is now much faster, but up/down speeds are identical.

I rebooted the router and did a speed test. She's getting 1.2Mb/s down, 0.12 Mb/s up....

This seems AWFULLY slow to me, even on a budget broadband package...

Mysky app says her speed is good. Surely this isn't right?

@Cleggsta One device only or everything connected, wireless or wired speed testing, also which sky hub are you using? Poweline is what it is, hard to workout what is going on at times, the Tp-Link Software on mine is about as good as a chocolate teapot in front off the chocolate fireguard. You just need to back it all off and find out what is going on, best is speed test Ethernet connection to the sky Hub nothing else connected and all wireless off, otherwise you have no idea what is happening background activity!

If you happen to use the SR203 then wan stat's can be usefull to see what is going on!

Re: Broadband speed "no problems" at 12 mbps?!

I tested both wireless / over WiFi, and again using ether net powerlines from a PlayStation.

I then tested WiFi only (mobile data off) from my phone, sat right by the router.

Then, I got the home owner to reconnect her mobile phone to the WiFi only, and ran  the MySky app. The app confirmed the same speed I had been seeing - 12.3mbps in this case - the app saying this was 'good'.

In all tests the  up and down speeds were consistent.

Nobody else was connected to or using the homes internet while doing the test.

Re: Broadband speed "no problems" at 12 mbps?!

I will go back tomorrow and re-check as you have suggested.

For tonight, I made sure every device in the home was off, and all phones disconnected from her hub, as I wanted to get an accurate picture of what the true speed was 🙏

Re: Broadband speed "no problems" at 12 mbps?!

@Cleggsta Until you test direct on the sky Hub, you HAVE NO idea what is going on, Poweline Ethernet is NOT the way to test Ethernet speed! For example i will NEVER trust my Samsung Mobile for speed testing, but my Asus Laptop that syncs 1730/1730Mbps on a FF500 Fibre yes no issues, phone is just too erratic at times, not a good testing medium!

And no matter what my Desktop on Ethernet or any Ethernet connection is fine, My network with 20 Devices i trust every device so no need to disconnect anything, just take the Fudge factor's away from the total's for me that is anything upto a 100Mb/s off the FF500!

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

@Cleggsta Sky test the speed to the hub daily and record the result in the service checker in the My Sky app which is accessible by the account hokder. If the speed to the hub is restricted which is possible then that test should pick it up and offer to book an engineer if the speed is lower than the guaranteeed speed for the line. Long partial fibre lines can have low guarantees but the synmmetrical download and upload speeds make that unlikely in this case.

Sky support work from these tested speeds and normally wont accept speeds test results from devices.
