Broadband download speed an eleventh of averaged promised

Hi, in my Broadband essential + package I am supposed to be getting download speeds of around 11 MB/sec. At the moment it is downloading a 4 GB file at around 1 MB/sec and taking for ever. It is always really slow downloading: images download gradually like they used to in the old days!

Is there anything I can do about this? Many thanks for suggestions!

The vast majority of addresses with an Openreach connection can now get FTTC ('up to' 80Mbs, average 56Mbs) or Ultrafast at 150, 500 or 900Mbs over FTTP.  Unfortunately yours is one of the last few percent which cannot do so.

@Geranium   Please can you post your router stats so the forum can advise on any issues. This link explains how to do that https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Broadband/How-to-find-your-Sky-Broadband-router-stats/td-p/2855717#

Like you I'm a customer here, Sky Employees are clearly identified as such.

Note that 1MBs is the same as 8Mbs.

Essential+ is ADSL and essentially obsolete in the modern world.

Your normal range is 4-11Mbps out of a maximum of 24Mbps which is good considering the distance to your exchange

Unfortunately superfast fttc is not available and you would probably need to wait until fttp arrives

Ofcom allow isps to quote average speeds which in skys case is 59Mbps.

The average for ADSL is more like 14Mbs (urban) and 7Mbs (rural)

Thanks @cookiemonsteruk . I was only getting 1 Mbps today. But you've explained it well, thanks. I used to be  with  Virgin and the speed was WAY faster but we left eventually because it was getting too expensive. You get what you pay for!

Sky still seem to publish the 59Mbps average around AFAIK

For FTTC, yes, but this is ADSL.

@Geranium

Unfortunately ADSL speed relates almost entirely to distance from the telephone exchange, and your speed is actually better than Openreach predicts.

With Virgin you'd be paying for an entirely different network topology which can actually deliver a decent speed to your location, compared to ADSL over Openreach telephone cable which really cannot.

My bad . So they just can't say 59Mbps regardless of connection type it must be in relation to others who have the same connection type👍

I think such a small percentage of properties are still on ADSL (low single digits) that ISPs don't bother making a distinction in their advertised speed figures.

Re: Broadband download speed an eleventh of averaged promised

So what do most Sky users have for broadband? Does it differ depending on the package?
