Broadband Lack of Sky full fibre

Just read a long list of people losing their copper phone lines as it's old tech.

Hang on!

I still got so called old tech by openreach./Sky
But Fleet in Hampshire 35 miles from London

still has copper broadband. Why do Sky and several other Broadband suppliers put up with it?

The national roll out of fttp is in the hands of openreach. Isp's have little to no say in the matter

@IanEA  The network that all providers other than those like Virgin and Alt nets connect to the Openreach network which is in the process of shutting down the old copper network and moving everyone over to fibre optic lines.

The Openreach target is to have 80% of  properties in the UK within reach of FTTP by the end of 2026: these are the ones deemed 'commercially viable'.  The remaining 20% is more problematic, and some addresses are likely to be served by digital data over copper into the next decade.

This is a different project to national PSTN switch-off, which is supposed to happen in December 2025.  Non-PSTN service can be delivered over both copper and optical circuits.

It's important to understand that all this means is at addresses where FTTP is available there's no other option for future changes and an ISP cannot order or provision any new service over a copper circuit.

Also perhaps worth recognising that some media outlets are choosing to encourage a climate of fear around the situation.  

It does not imply either mandatory switching where a change in service isn't ordered, or involuntary disconnection because 'copper stops working': neither of those is permitted by Ofcom and would clearly be both socially and politically unacceptable.

@IanEA some addresses in Fleet can already get full fibre and the Openreach map says the build is due to restart in the next 12 months see https://www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband/where-when-building-ultrafast-full-fibre-broadband but enter your own post code to check. It's pretty random which roads get done when. I assume it makes sense to Openreach planners but to us lesser mortals it is very confusing.

most customers Sky is the broadband supplier. Pushing old tech. We  jave copper and Openreach don't seem to have a logical roll out, just a random mess. Ask for a date and they have know idea . Are they Fit for purpose, I think not !

Openreach is the national monopoly telecoms infrastructure supplier, so hopefully they are.

They aren't under any obligation to disclose fine-grain planning though: regional rollout (at an exchange level) is typically advised ahead of time.

As noted above, ISPs such as Sky (and indeed BT/EE/Plusnet) don't lay their own cabling, and are not permitted to influence Openreach.

Pehaps it should be broken up , OpenReach is not for customer's satisfaction. Problem is nobody seems concerned it is  poor monopoly who answer to nobody. Ofcom is another joke

moving on Sky want £6 for Sky Max for a copper Broadband. , a few months back it was not compatible with Copper . And not advalable . You have to watch your back  these days !

The Openreach monopoly is a legacy of British Telecom privatisation in the 1980s.

Max has always been compatible with copper broadband, but not with Sky Q television.

Odd that still offered Max, Sky know I have  2tb sky Q box.

privatisation kill customer service agreed.

post Office, water.  Energy price fixing Electric,

and  OpenReach and others. Not for the ordinary customers, sorry a bit of a rant !

Sky now offers Max to addresses with a main Q box, but not with Minis or Q boosters.
