Bought 5 GB up/down Internet - but how am I supposed to use it?

I’ve just signed up to Sky’s new Gigafast package (5Gb up and down), but I’m struggling to see how it can actually be utilized.

  • The Gigafast+ Hub only has one 10Gb port, and that’s already taken up by the fibre ONT.
  • That leaves only 4 x 1Gb ports, so every wired connection is capped at 1Gb.
  • I bought a 10Gb switch and 2.5Gb Ethernet cards for my PCs, but it looks like I can’t even put a switch between the ONT and Sky router.
  • From what I can tell, third-party routers aren’t supported on the new service either.

So realistically, what have I paid for? At the moment it feels like I may as well downgrade, because there doesn’t seem to be any way to actually achieve speeds above 1Gb on multiple devices.

Am I missing something here, or is this just how Sky have set it up?

I'm all sorted now thanks, I made a dumb mistake and overlooked there is a WAN port which is 10gb, and there is one spare 10gb port

Well don't I feel stupid trying to overcomplicate things they're actually is a 10 GB port and a separate WAN port

I was trying to look at it through a tight space. I thought there was four slots instead of five

@TeasingPenguin  just out of interest, do you have a specific requirement for Utilizing the 10 gb/s port to get a 5 gb/s speed?

All i can think is maybe if you download a lot of steam games for instance, an 80GB game will download a lot quicker than my 500 mbps speed as an example, but apart from that I'm not sure of any advantage.

I am also interested since I have 500Mbs connection.

Unless I am mistaken these game download sites have bottle neck so would it really take full advantage ??

I suppose if there were multiple people downloading same time then yes there is advantge..

Patiently waits for answer 😊

@TeasingPenguin You have a 5Gb/s speed through put, if Steam will only server supply at say 1Gb/s then that is all you are going to get, you are going to find it hard to get High Speed data server's for testing. Most are not ready for prime time, try a few and see how they go, speed test's push so little data through they are only a guide!
