Benefits of an option61/mer compatible router?
So thinking of replacing my stock sky router for a WiFi 6 enabled router.
I was planning and connecting it to my sky hub and turning wifi off. But looking through the forums, I have noticed some people are recommending using a router that will directly replace the sky hub. But it needs to be able to work on sky's option 61 .
What is the actual benefit of this?

Turning off Sky WiFi doesn't make a Hub into a modem: it will still route traffic and so create a double NAT, which is an issue for some people and particularly serious gamers.

@snowy1985 unless the Sky hub is causing issues you are unlikely to see much gain as a third party router will connect to the line at broadly the same speed. The main issue most people including myself have is poor wifi coverage where you can turn off the hub's wifi and attach a wifi mesh system like my Deco M4 wifi 5 units running as access points. This gives me 500Mb/s in my main living area dropping to 200Mb/s at the furthest point which is more than fast enough to stream uhd video, play games use business apps etc.
Wifi 6 does give higher speeds if your devices also support wifi 6 but unless you have a Gigabit full fibre connection wifi 5 will be fast enough. One thing to consider is why you think you need extra speed to give an example streaming Sky's football coversge in UHD uses around 25Mb/s apps like Netflix need less. Very few apps can use more than 100Mb/s so apart from file downloads your expensive bandwidth may not get much use.
