…..when using the router in access point mode connected to the Sky Hub? (Need latter for Sky Talk)
I can’t. Have tried all the recommended connection settings in Sky Q and a few tweaks advised by Asus. (Also disabled 5Ghz and hotspots on Sky Q and ditto the three WiFi on Sky Hub. Box sees and connects to 2.4 network but then disconnects after a few minutes.
Only way to connect is via ethernet between Sky FTTP hub (SR203) and Sky Q box. V unsatisfactory.
I’m assuming it’s something to do with channels? Asus is using 9 and 56 respectively, and I think Sky Q was using 36 for the 2.4 network for the brief time it’s been connected.
Was going to list all the devices that now work perfectly, pleasure ripping out all the ethernet, then realised someone would say I’ve answered my own question😀
BTW- I did try re-enabling WiFi on the Sky router but that had same issue. Also confusing with multiple SSIDs showing up.
Any wisdom from the gurus would be much appreciated.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreWouldnt have a clue to be honest. As others have already said Sky Q is a mystery sometimes. I have never messed with it while using a device in AP mode so haven't really got any first hand experience to go off.

Appogies-meant Sky Q to third party router....

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreQ will only connect to 3rd party routers via 2.4ghz so the 5ghz channel doesnt matter.
What settings do you have set for WiFi on the 2.4ghz band? E.g. Security (WPA2/3), Protected management frames, etc

Hi James
In the Asus settings, the 2.4 connection is wpa2 personal but have also tried the combined wpa2/3. The protected management frames setting is disabled. The only other thing I noticed was wireless mode-this is set to auto, but there’s a tick next to b/g protection and disable 11b. The 802.11ax/wifi 6 mode is also enabled. I understand this setting is backwards compatible.
Asus separately asked me to put it into “compatibility mode”, where the 802.11ax/wifi 6, WiFi agile multiband and target wake time were all disabled. These changes didn’t solve the problem either
(Smart connect is off)
There’s obviously something which Q (uniquely it seems) doesn’t like.
Thanks again

That's correct: Q was designed in 2014-15 using proprietary technology from AirTies. Q television boxes and boosters are not standard WiFi client devices.

Thanks. However, I'm guessing some folk have successfully connected Q to their third part router? (In AP mode)

Also, just remembered- we had Sky + wirelessly connected to FTTC router for years with no issues.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@hapazard2 Sky Q and Sky+ have completly different networking set ups Sky + is a simple network client as are the new Sky Stream pucks.
. Sky Q, however, uses a proprietry mesh wifi system which is why there are difference however there are literally millions of customers using third party routers with Sky Q. Simply the main Q box only connects to the 2.4GHz band. Where there is no Sky hub the 5GHz band hotspot is used to connect to Sky Q minis. You therefore need to manage the potential for interference with your main router's 5GHz signal. By default Sky Q uses ch36 with a 80MHz bandwidth so will interfere with signals in the ch36 to ch52 range but you can reset the Q boxes to use a 40 MHz bandwidth ie ch36 to 44 or ch44 to ch52.
Best solution where you want third party wifi and Sky Q is to hardwre tge Q boxes andcturn off their wifi.

Morning
Nany thanks. We don't have any minis, so switched off 5Ghz settings in the hidden menu. Shouldn't that negate the interference problem? (That said, I notice the setting seems to revert to on each time I try (and fail) to connect to the 2.4 network)
The Asus is set channel 56 for 5Ghz, so shouldn't that already be free from interference? I notice the connection mode is auto. I guess I could manually change that to always use that channel?
I've tried all the 5Ghz settings on the Q box but no cigar.
Ethernet option involves ugly trunking around fireplace-not satisfactory.
Onwards and upwards.
Many thanks again.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@hapazard2 sounds fine if your Asus is using ch56 I wouldnt worry about what the Q box is using. These days with modern routers you shouldnt need to manually manage channels the units do a better job on auto most of the time.

Thanks again. Problem is Sky Q disconnects after a few mins every time I connect to the 2.4Ghz network in the Asus,

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreI've have my Asus RT-AX88u connected to Sky Q so I know its possible.
The only difference I can see is your using AP mode whereas I use Router mode because mine is connected directly to the line. Can you try putting the Asus in router mode and see if Sky Q stays connected then? (You can still keep the Asus router connected to your Sky hub, just put it in router mode)

Thanks. Will try that and report back. Will I need to fiddle with client identifier thingy? (Presumably not if still hooked up to SR203?)

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreNo, in router mode just set the WAN to Automatic IP and leave everything else blank/default. It should pickup an IP from the Sky hub
