Advice needed on Telephone connection with new Sky Fibre Broadband installation

Hi guys. I'm working with a new FTTP installation here which is going really well  - (at least it is now!)  This has changed our home phone setup of course.  I now access the phone line using the original telephone receiver via the BS6213 port on the Sky router.  (That's the standard British telephone Type 600 with the clip on the side.)  I would like to upgrade that handset to a VoIP LAN specific type which will allow for RJ45 cabling.  I'm looking at something simple like a refurb Cisco 7962 which come very cheap.

Can I just plug in any VoIP telephone into my network switch, (fairly extensive for a home/work setup)?  I'm not sure if there is a requirement to plug a phone directly into the router.  I.n not clear on whether the Sky router is already handling telephone comms as a master or if any LAN phone is talking directly to Sky via the routers normal internet action.  Can anyone clarify that please?

No such thing as ring equivalent here . The thing to do is buy a set of eg panasonic dect phones . The main one goes into the back of the hub and the satellite phones scattered around the house using their own 1.9 freq to communicate

Sky Stream , Sky Superfast, SR203 router, Tp link td w9970 + Asus RT AX58U (backup), Xbox Series X, google home mini, LG 43 inch UHD tv, samsung a5 2017 and samsung s21

If I get it right mark as answered

What you describe is for true voip services such as vonage. You must use the bt socket ata on the back of the hub to use your own telephone number

That sounds like I will have to set up a second wired network of telephone cables to use more that one phone then.  Have I got that right?

Thanks CookieMonster.  That's what I needed to know and it takes me forwards.  I'll look into that from here.  Have a good blue furry one handed evening. 😁

For clarity: the 'phone' socket on the rear of a Sky Broadband Hub is an Analogue Telephone Adapter which permits a 'normal' analogue handset (or DECT basestation) to access the Sky Talk Internet Calls (VOIP) telephony service and the telephone number assigned (or ported in) by Sky.  The software configuration for this service is baked into the ATA and otherwise undocumented.

It's certainly possible to use any 'real' VOIP service and attach 'real' VOIP handsets over ethernet to the Hub ethernet ports, but that would require subscription to a 'real' VOIP provider and software configuration of the phone hardware as specified by that provider: such a setup cannot access the bundled Sky Talk provision or its assigned phone number.

Re: Advice needed on Telephone connection with new Sky Fibre Broadband installation

Yes, that ties things up nicely.  Thanks Timmy Comic Book Guy.  The simplest way for the moment is to accept I have to bite the bullet and get a slightly more expensive DECT setup from the outset.  It's a small price to pay for the better comms and functionality.

As an observation, what is it with online people that we all want to be puppets or cartoon characters?  I have always had a leaning towards Grover myself.  (My wife says I'm more Gonzo.  Unfortunately I just can't seem to juggle chickens successfully.)

Is it possible to upload exclusive avatars to the Sky Community site or is the additional storage too much for Sky?

EDIT:  Just found the info re "privileges" at various levels.  That's how I can edit this post and add the signature, Level 3.  Avatar to follow at Level 5.  I'm feeling dizzy already.
