1 Gbps connection only gives 550Mbps speed, Only 1 connected device
Ireland - Dublin
I recently had a SKY broadband connection installed with a 1 Gbps speed plan, but I have never received the promised speed. Despite having only one device connected, my speed tests consistently show a maximum of 550 Mbps, which is nearly half of the advertised speed.
I have already checked my setup and ensured there are no other devices consuming bandwidth. Given that I subscribed to a 1 Gbps plan, I expect speeds much closer to this, especially under optimal conditions.

Re: 1 Gbps connection only gives 550Mbps speed, Only 1 connected device
@AnkurAnand the black Sky hub can deliver the full 900Mb/s over its LAN ethernet connection but given it is a WiFi5 device the WiFi speeds tops out around 650Mb/s so your 550Mb/s sounds quite likely. You need a WiFi6 device and hub to access the full speed over WiFi. However given apart from downloading very few apps can use the 550Mb/s let alone need more.

Re: 1 Gbps connection only gives 550Mbps speed, Only 1 connected device
Thank you very much for the explanation.
I’ll ask Sky to downgrade or cancel the package since they advertised 1 Gbps speed but provided a box that can’t go beyond 550 Mbps. I’d rather switch to the 500 Mbps plan
Best Regards!

The advertised speed is for ethernet connected devices, not WiFi. This is the same for all ISPs

This is not a live chat, its a forum, responses will not be instant. Additionally you are not speaking to Sky, the forum is mainly other customers offering assistance.
When you completed the ethernet based speedtest was it on a quiet network? E.g. other devices disconnected?
Was the device wired directly to the hub and not through something like a switch, splitter, booster, extender or powerline adapters?
