Re: Why do sky put on so many advertisements. We pay to watch programs not adverts

The subtitles are terrible. Both netflix and prime will play the subtitles in viewing after pausing. Makes me think that sky is just a money operating system, disinterested in content. They even have adverts for PPV box office events. £19.95 isn't enough to rely on the primary focus being the content, sky still wants to squeeze more money from any direction. The fact that there are vouchers in supermarkets for now tv subscriptions in supermarkets - for starters - than what's requested via direct debit for loyal users only confirms the fact further.

Re: Why do sky put on so many advertisements. We pay to watch programs not adverts

I do get tired of reading how Sky (or other companies) are "ripping us off" "paying fat wages and bonuses to executives" etc.  Sky are a commercial company and charge a price for their product, if they pitch it wrong and charge too much the public won't pay it, the fact that so many are paying it and watching the adverts (which by the way can be easily fast forwarded if recorded) indicates they have pitched it right.

Of course as some have said they are going to cancel, that's fine, then do it, it's your choice. This is what commerce is all about it's always been that way.  Remember also that those making money out of this don't keep it under their mattresses they go out and spend it, on smart cars fancy meals, nice homes, and all the less well off that work in these places benefit, that's how commercialism works.  Why is it such a crime to make money?

I'd say the topic is more as to how commercialism isn't working. I'm guessing the people posting here are probably paying varying amounts for the same product, the most expensive being from source directly ie now tv. When the top 1% of global net wealth own half of all wealth then I guess they're not splashing out on these things quick enough.

@Stephen+Mourton

If Sky hadn't tied up exclusive rights to much of the sport.. Golf, Cricket, Football etc and customers had an  alternative to go to, you'd have some leg to stand on but they haven't, so that's a load of **bleep**.

Sky have got sport-lovers by the short hairs and are milking it for all it's worth.

And trying to talk good Sky paying fat-cats exorbitantly is just laughable.

Exclusive rights which they could acquire by being able to bid more than the competition...

Sky payed to get  Dominating Monopoly and a Dominating MONOPOLY is never in the interest of the customer.

The rights holders sold to the highest bidder: it's their product, and they can do that.  Kind of the point of auctioning-off broadcast rights, really: the aim is usually not to earn less.

Anyway, the Sky 'monopoly' is unlikely to last now Amazon could buy the rights to every sporting event on the planet and not notice the cost...

They ensure in the interest of the customers there are no dominating monopolies in for instance banking and newspapers etc.. They should also do it in broadcasting.. especially when there's an obvious dominating monopoly in one area, like Sky and Sports..

The customers need protection from monopoly rip-offs.. like with Sky.. having to pay through the nose for their sports and still being stuffed full of annoying adverts.  Especially full of the  gambling adverts that are on sport channels, trying to con the customers to spend even more of their hard earned money for an in a dangerous addiction.. they banned smoking adverts.. they should also ban gambling adverts. A RESPONSIBLE media wouldn't even take them.

'They' are governments, so feel free to lobby your MP.

It's perhaps also worth noting that the most bloated sports events (F1, Premier League Football, the Olympics) are kept afloat by auctioning television broadcast rights, so any attempt at such regulation typically encounters a certain amount of resistance from within the sporting industry itself: monopoly buying keeps their own income up.

Happily I live in The Netherlands and have no MP..

And even more happily, I get my TV feeds through IPTV on the Internet. So when adverts come, on I flip to another feed on a Dutch, Belgian, German, USA channel. Luckily I have no interest whatsoever in UK football. My interests are in golf, F1, tennis, cricket ... and cricket I can get via Indian, Australian or South Africa channels.

I'm just sorry for UK customers that don't use IPTV.

Well seeing as I'd once tried to purchase a contract from Sky but they wouldn't sell to overseas, I sure have no qualms.. and Sky sure shouldn't moan.

The prisons are full of people who steal because they can't get something legally. Yet some people have no misgivings about stealing from rights owners.
