Why do sky put on so many advertisements. We pay to watch programs not adverts

Can anyone tell me why Sky tv seems to be the only pay to view service which interrupts programs constantly with advertisements? Which they also get paid for.

Just greed is it.?

Perhaps worth noting that Netflix runs at a significant loss on its current subscription rates, and continues to exist on borrowing and investment capital.  There's a reason broadcast channels have adverts...

@brightsereis1  Sky would be a lot more expensive if they didn't augment subs income with advertising income.

Sky is not unique in carrying advertising. Virgin does, as do pretty much all of the US cable networks.

The beauty of being able to record stuff means you can always plan your viewing skip through adverts if you like too.

Try downloading instead of recording said program, this gets rid of most (if not all) of the adverts 😊

@brightsereis1 , like most companies. Sky monetise everything and adverts play a big part in their revenue stream. I agree about other providers. For me though sky cost has gone down significantly so I can live with the irritation. Good luck

@brightsereis1

Google "how does commercial television work" and educate yourself because you are lacking in some fundamental basics...

Do you know how programmes get funded and made? It's not via magic fairy dust.

Adverts on sky channels seem to be getting more frequent, I will not be renewing at the end of my contract, I will use netflix as I watch this now 80% of the time

Sky will continue to charge and put adverts on as well, because they get away with it. Because we keep paying and advertisers keep paying. What's not to like from Sky's viewpoint? They have no good reason to stop. And will continue to  increase their charges whenever they want to.  Unless we start leaving sky.

I am definitely for leaving. I hardly ever watch Sky now, even though I pay handsomely for it.  I don't like the adverts or the subtitles and certainly don't like paying.

@Anonymous

You're incorrect I'm afraid. And it doesn't only apply to Sky channels. There are OFCOM limits on how much of any commercial hour can be adverts, and every commercial broadcaster maximises it but is not allowed to exceed it. The proportion hasn't recently changed so it is, I'm afraid, your imagination - as you say, it might 'seem to be' but it isn't.

You can cancel if you like but all you'll do is end you access to Sky channels, and be stuck with Freeview which is likewise full of commercial broadcasters maximising their ad limits.

@brightsereis1

You've had five months since I suggested you read up on how broadcasting in the UK is funded, and you're still as unenlightened.

@brightsereis1 Meanwhile their long term debt increased from 10.3Bn in 2018 to 14.7Bn in 2019.

They are still in throwing money at it mode.

Re: Why do sky put on so many advertisements. We pay to watch programs not adverts

@brightsereis1 I'm surprised you didn't know that lol. Most of the services like Netflix operate at a loss and when you look at the finances it talks about net profit which people seem to think is the money they have left over and is pure profit which is not the case. Net profit does not include the expenses as it's purely the income, think of it like fishing where you have a net full of fish which gets emptied and stored then when the boat gets to shore all that fish is sent off to different places. Same thing goes for net profit, the money is paid out to others.

Netflix had income of $1.3 billion this year but their expenses were $3 billion and their total expenses/debt is around $15 billion.

That's not accurate.

In 2019 Netflix did make a net profit of 1.9Bn USD on revenues of 20.1Bn

but they took on more long term debt as well which will bring some pressure on future margins as they service that, even at the current low interest rates.
