Where has CNN news gone my box saying no signal for this channel ?

I did not say that the wind did move the dish, I was just saying that it was possible for a strong wind to move a dish slightly, especially if it has been in place for many years without any maintenance

I live quite a distance from my elderly Dad. I don't have Sky TV. ...., so when my Dad suddenly started complaining a couple of weeks ago that he was unable to view CNN as usual on channel 506, I led him (over the phone) through the procedure of turning off the electricity, waiting, turning it back on, then allowing the Sky box to reboot. Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem.

I visited him yesterday and immediately noticed (as others on this forum has said) that 506 is the CNN HIGH DEFINITION channel - yet even though my Dad has always refused to pay the small HD add on fee it's  unclear why he's always been able to view CNN on 506 HD - unless it's always been broadcast with an SD signal - but now perhaps it's suddenly exclusively HD. 

The problem was solved when I told him about CNN SD on 878.  I realise this doesn't solve the problem for HD viewers........but since CNN is currently the best UK tv source for news re. Trump's hopefully impending impeachment, I think the SD on 878 option is better than nothing! 😃

CNN HD is free to air so doesn't require a HD sub to be able to access it.

CNN on 506 HD and 878 SD are both available on a SkyHD box without subscription.

The problem is that CNN HD on 506 has moved to a transponder that is now weakly received (it's a technical problem due to its frequency being right on the frquency limit of the LNB). It's easily demonstrated with a spectrum analyser.

This means that the dish has to be operating at peak peformance to receive it. A small misalignment or reduction in signal (through heavy clouds/rain) will cause problems.

Thanks for replying. Are you saying that even though ch506 is broadcast in HD, it should still be viewable in SD format on that channel...to viewers who don't pay Sky's HD add on fee?

For example...should all viewers, regardless of what they pay, be able to view both CNN channels i.e. 506 & 878?

As a non-Sky customer, I'm trying to figure out whether my Dad's Sky satellite dish is wonky or if Sky's got issues with channel 506....so that we can figure out what his complaint is....once he has to enter Sky call centre hell!

What I am saying @carrona  is that even if your Dad doesn't subscribe to the HD package he can still watch the free channels and CNN HD on 516 is a free channel so if everything is well he should be able to access it. He would also be able to watch the free HD channels from the BBC, ITV etc...

So to answer your question he should be able to watch both the HD and SD channel from CNN on 516 and 878.

CNN is constantly on and off. It's almost always on in the morning but often it will be unavailable in the afternoon and evening. It's the only channel I have a problem with. It's seem to correlate with bad weather. I think there are now enough of us experiencing the same thing to say it's Sky's issue.

Come on Sky! There are impeachment hearings and the 2020 election is coming up!

@ JP-123 It's not really a Sky problem as CNN isn't Sky, any more than BBC is Sky. 

BBC and CNN and others pay SES, the satellite provider, to put their channels on SES's Astra satellites and they pay Sky to add them to their programme guide so you can pick them up easily. You can pick them up with non-Sky satellite receivers (such as FreeSat).

The channel that they've moved to is at the cross-over point of the two frequency bands covered by the standard LNB, and having done a lot of tests with spectrum analysers and other test equipment, it appears to me that the sensitivity there isn't so good. The result is that a relatively small misalignment of the dish or LNB, rain fade or anything else reducing the efficiency of your dish can cause reception problems. 

I know that Sky has taken an interest in the problem, but the issue needs to be referred to SES or CNN themselves. However, I've tried (and I have a couple of insider contacts) and got nowhere.

@JP-123  Sky have aleady said that anyone experiencing problems with reception of CNN should arrange a callout as it's likely caused by a dish alignment issue.

I had this problem but it went away when I upgraded to SkyQ and the engineer fitted a new dish. He said the LNB's only last about 10 years and mine was 15 years old. I had previously contacted CNN and CNN International but didn't get a reply (which was expected).

Yes i am.the same i have 2 boxes and neither can get cnn channel 506 every other channel works perfectly. I ahve rebooted boxes checked signal strength. It is not a fault with my equipment. Why wont someone from sky respond to this query from lots of different customers @Anonymous

@Vivco  a response on behalf of Sky was given earlier in this somewhat old thread. It's a problem with your equipment - most likely a slight dish misalignment, and you'll need to book a service call.

That does not make sence so everybodys boxs became unaligned at the same time and all it effected was the same channel for everyone. Can someonw from sky not admit there is a problem with cnn 506. I could understand if there was not loads complaining about it and everyone is getting the same error message and.it happened at the same time.
