Re: Cancelled Ultra Fibre Optic Broadband
"with their own cables"
Talk talk use openreach apart from York. If they say they need to install their "own" cables it means the city fibre cabling is not compatible with openreach but also appears to be backtracking on any previous statements that they will continue with ufo

Re: Cancelled Ultra Fibre Optic Broadband
In a strange twist - I went to the Cityfibre site - -entered my postcode and the respose is:
"Thanks for your interest, we haven’t planned your area at the moment. To be the first to know when we are coming to your street and when you can access full fibre broadband, please sign up with us for updates."
they maybe forgot they were here 5 years ago..

Re: Cancelled Ultra Fibre Optic Broadband
@cookiemonsteruk i don't understand the technical ins and outs but York UFO network just seems to be off the radar of everybody's systems.

Re: Cancelled Ultra Fibre Optic Broadband
Yep, and unfortunately appears neither city fibre nor talk talk want to jump in and take back the city.

Yes, because as I mentioned above, it was a trial for a future which never happened.
(or, more specifically, it was the trial of one possible solution to a scenario which appeared entirely plausible in 2010, but was very different to reality in 2020)

maybe a trial - but still ongoing today:
an extract from Cityfiber's site - they have recently bought FibreNation from TalkTalk.

Re: Cancelled Ultra Fibre Optic Broadband
Sorry, can't seem to get the picture to upload.
from Digital City team below:
Good evening,
Thank you very much for your recent email to the Digital City York mailbox. This is a quick update to let you know that it has been safely received.
We have received a high volume of correspondence from a number of concerned residents alerting us about Sky’s decision to discontinue their UFO service. We don’t quite understand Sky’s stance on this decision, however we have a meeting with a representative from CityFibre tomorrow (Thursday, 16th September) to discuss this matter further.
For your background information, CityFibre is responsible for building York’s Ultra Fibre Optic (UFO) network. UFO originally began as a joint venture between SKY and TalkTalk in 2016. Currently the only other service provider on CityFibre’s network in York is TalkTalk. The current message from CityFibre is as follows:
“You should be able to order UFO via TalkTalk as soon your current Sky service is ceased. You can place an order with them by phoning xxxx (saying it is a UFO line) and it can be remotely activated”.
Should you not wish to choose TalkTalk as your broadband provider, it is worth noting that CityFibre’s network will eventually host many
internet service providers in the next 6 months, however, it is likely none will be confirmed before the start of November when the SKY trial when end.

It's just a guess, but as I've mentioned elsewhere (with regards to the ending of the Sky Sports Mobile Television app) in US business culture it's not unusual for a parent corporation to close various operations within a new acquisition to demonstrate 'due diligence' is being exercised.

Re: Cancelled Ultra Fibre Optic Broadband
I'm not overly concerned that Sky for whatever reason have decided to stop providing a service. Hovever, in the world we are living in - data is as valuable as any other utility - If I want to swap my electricity provider I don't have to lose service, the supply simply changes from one provider to another. In this case it seems we are just being dropped.

Correct. Because the infrastructure you're currently on is a private one used only by one service provider, so no different to being with Virgin or many of the other FTTP networks.

Re: Cancelled Ultra Fibre Optic Broadband
@rscott at the risk of going round in circles, I think we've already established the network in question was being used by two providers, not one.
after Sky withdraw, TalkTalk will be the sole distributor of this service. But Sky customers are having to do a lot of work/investigation to try and move between the two.
and Sky's stance may be logical, but it's hardly customer-centric.
