Re: The stream is delayed compared to Sky Q and Sky +
It would be if we were allowed to revert to sky Q, but given the lack of customer focus, sky won't allow that. So I'm now iin a contract for 3 years with a service that is frankly **bleep**.

@Clare+Cullen The three year agreement is for the financial loan you took to purchase the tv providing you continue to pay this back you can cancel the tv subscription at anytime by giving 31 days notice and revert back to Q

Re: The stream is delayed compared to Sky Q and Sky +
The only finance options available for the Sky Glass TV are:
- Pay for it in full up front
- Sign a 24 month credit agreement
- Sign a 48 month credit agreement
I'm not sure where the 3 years is coming from?

Re: The stream is delayed compared to Sky Q and Sky +
I can't really understand the continued significant delay with Sky Glass and some other streaming services.
Often sports also live stream on bookmakers websites too - and they manage to use a feed that is only a few seconds behind live sport.
The technology is available - it's just sky and others that choose to use slower methods with far higher latency. I can only assume it is a reliability issue??

https://www.tvtechnology.com/news/super-bowl-lvi-streaming-averaged-50-60-seconds-behind-cable
https://www.dacast.com/blog/best-low-latency-video-streaming-solution/
These are a couple of links that highlight the problem - and that it is by choice of streaming services. There are options to bring the delay down to under 15 seconds. Services just don't use them.
Considering Sky TV still charge extra for HD I really shouldn't be surprised they don't push this

Re: The stream is delayed compared to Sky Q and Sky +
@mrwoodz511g Sky Glass is designed as an entertainment platform rather than a data delivery system. More customers would complain about issues with dropped frames etc if Sky started further removing buffers to speed up delivery but increase thecrisk of dropped frames etc.
CDN platforms are complex things but one aspect is streaming sport is lumpy the data levels rise and fall so some statistical work will be done to ensure the few million people watching a match are not going to need to peak at exactly the same point requiring possibly double the bandwidth if you spaced them out.
I am not a data engineer but one thing I know about Sky/Comcast is if there was a profit in having a "premium" sports service they would offer one. That it can be done isnt in question but at what cost both in quality and economic terms?

There's nothing great about Sky they charge ridiculous £ for sport then charge more box office and you still have to endure the advertising that on others you pay for no advertising?

If you watch the same events on Virgin Media or BT, you would still get adverts, it's the content provider rather than the carrier that control that.

What's more reliable? The weather or a broadband signal? 🤔

Re: The stream is delayed compared to Sky Q and Sky +
Glass or Stream is perfect for those of us who aren't permitted to install a dish. I've had Glass for almost 4 months, and the regular software updates have made noticeable improvements to the system.
As I don't have any sports notifications set up it makes not a jot of difference to me if there's a 60 - 90 second delay, I'm getting to watch the sports I like via a system which suits my needs.
As many have said before, Glass/Stream is not an upgrade to Sky Q, it's an alternative way to receive Sky programming.

@Clare+Cullen wrote:Ok, I appreciate that. Tell me what's better than the previous service?
The Playlist integration is one, still not perfect but a lot better than what's on Q (which seems limited to recordings and a selection of content which has been on TV in the recent past, and requires you to download them before watching) or even Chromecast with Google TV.
UHD on all sets with it instead of just one.
Also doesn't drop out in heavy rain like Sky/Freesat did!
------
Guess it depends where you've come from - but as someone who's live TV watching is limited to the F1, F2, and Formula E it's mainly been Now TV and the streaming apps (iPlayer, Disney+, Netflix, Prime, My5) for me for years- with the F1 and F2 moving to Sky for all the races (except the British GP) last year (and therefore Now TV) and Formula E being buried on the iPlayer / Channel 4s YouTube channel it's been a long time since I've recorded anything on my Freesat/Freeview PVR.
On the whole I find the Sky Stream app experience to be better than Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, and Roku - the Playlist being a big part in that - in general it feels more responsive (and doesn't break all the time like Chromecast with Google TV that keeps running out of disk space!) - alas Streaming still isn't perfect, Discovery+ lacking playlist integration & the sports content I pay for (on Sky Glass), no F1 TV or Nebula app being the big ones - but then again at no point have I ever had a single platform which has all the apps I use (although with the very recent addition of Now TV, Chromecast with Google TV would, if only it had enough storage to install them all!)
I find the delay on Sky Sports F1 to be around 38-40 seconds on the Glass/Stream and around 90 seconds on Sky Go via Android. Very noticeable on the F1 Live Timing app which thankfully has a "pause" option to bring it in sync. (Annoyingly it's actually behind Freeview HD which meant watching F1 on Channel 4 always ahead of Live Timing by a second - shame Channel 4 on Freesat was SD only at the time!).

Re: The stream is delayed compared to Sky Q and Sky +
@myireland17 currently you have the choice of 2 Sky TV systems which have pros and cons which is better is down to what and how you watch. However in the not too distant future somebody has to pay to replace the satellites Sky uses as their life is limited to around 2028 or thereabouts. Independent analysts expect Sky to then switch totally to streaming as it has potential to save them £100m a year.
Sky have hinted they are looking to reduce the delay for live sport streams and if you search online for low latency broadcast streaming you can see there are methods to reduce the streaming delay to be roughly the same as satellite broadcasts or potentially a bit better.
