They are using existing tech, I don't see a shortage of chips being an issue.

So is most of the manufacturing industry, doesn't mean they can source the ICs.  Try getting your hands on a 2TB Sky Q box.....

I doubt that the unavailability of 2TB Sky Q boxes is just due to chip shortages.

Re: Sky to launch Sky Q without dish by Xmas based on Xfinity X1 box

Well, it's good news, of course, but it's about time. I mean, this is around 4 years now after Sky initially announced that this was in the pipeline. I will definitely get it when it's out but until then, I'm not going to bother with Sky Q because I live in a block with a communal dish and I have been getting different and conflicting information regarding compatibility, which means I don't know for sure if it is compatible with Sky Q or not and how much messing around would be needed to make it compatible if it wasn't or if the engineers might need to get onto the roof, and if the landlord would even give them permission.

So, bottom line, rather than risk running into a legal barrier that will stymie the completion of the set-up after paying the one-off fee and setting up a new DD that I might have to end up cancelling, I'd much rather wait for this broadband-only Sky Q Box which will be set up purely within my jurisdiction, with no need to seek permission to do what needs to be done etc, to get it up and running. Thanks.

I wonder what LIVE broadcast channels will be included, and whether they'll include the likes of BBC, STV, etc.

I'm sure someone posted a copy of the forum rules recent and it stated something about baiting....

if I bite does that mean you get into trouble @Lawrence+cope

It should be all of them: that's kind of the point, although I guess the BBC may well get stroppy over iPlayer. Presumably regional variations will be dealt with using subscription postcode just as with satellite broadcast.

@tarbat  Given the issues with Sky q hardware/firmware etc being discussed across the community it is interesting that Sky are increasing the range of customer hardware that they need to support.   So, we have the q boxes, the Xinfinty derived or based box and the Sky Q IP box released in Germany also for IP based streaming. I suppose the question is whether this drives costs up more than trying to get all your requirements in one box (even if some customers don't need the sat tuners) vs functionality. How much customisation of the Xfinity boxes will Sky need to make or is the big move towards everything COMCAST ?

Sky Q IP box offers Sky via broadband, but only in Germany (pocket-lint.com)

I'd imagine that's a huge challenge for Sky to agree the IP broadcast of hundreds of channels from multiple providers, all willing to give up broadcast control to Sky.

It wouldn't be the first time! Seriously I hope it does have the reminder facility (if indeed this new box comes to pass). I am sure it would be a well used facility despite what some would have you to believe.

I would certainly be interested in a no dish box given my opinion that Q is a crock, but if not, my HD+ box will do 'till such times as Sky decide to retire their most polished device.

Will this box support HLG and Dolby Vision. I see it supports Doly Atmos?

LOL I believe it's got better Reminder functions than your outdated Sky+ HD boxes put together @Lawrence+cope according to this after a google search.

I agree. But the broadcasters will need to recognise they have to do it at some point. The future does not include aerials or dishes.
