Re: Sky on demand not connecting - sky plus box

We have been experiencing this for the last few weeks. We either lose the whole connection, or since I manually entered the IP settings, and the broadband seems to be more settled and now it's just the on demand that shows as fails.

we have tried the long power down approach for both our router and box, but this only temporarily fixes the issue. We've also tried the. Red button reset.

Our box has the WPS button, so no separate. Box involved, and we are using a wireless connection.  Any suggestions gladly accepted, as it is not acceptable to have to go through this rigmarole every day or so just to be able to access a service that is being paid handsomely for.  This is clearly a design issue given the number of people reporting it and I would have expected Sky to have had a defect fix delivered for this by now.

Re: Sky on demand not connecting - sky plus box

Hi

I recently changed my WiFi to a 4g EE network as I was in poor performing copper broadband before.
when I have reconnected my sky and logged in with my WiFi password it says connection to broad band router ok but connection to on demand fail.
i have re entered the password multiple times and also turned off the whole system but no joy. No in demand functions will work
can some help explain this please ?

Re: Sky on demand not connecting - sky plus box

I think you may have to assign a manual IP address, as 4G routers are often poor at using DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) which should assign a local IP address to the On Demand box. If you look back on this thread, somone posted details of how to do this. You can check on your router's tool box (usually http://192.168.1.1 where you will need the user name, usually admin unless you have changed it and your router password - if you have not changed this already from the default, a very good idea to do so). Go into that part of the router menu to see the list of connected devices. You should see the Sky On Demand box on the list with its IP address and if not, then that is an indication that assigning a manual IP address might cure the problem.

Ok sounds very complicated but will see if I can do it. A company has Installed it and they have kept all names and passwords the same

Re: Sky on demand not connecting - sky plus box

Th IP address on my sky box is 192.168.1.17

there is nothing on  my new router showing an IP address

Re: Sky on demand not connecting - sky plus box

There will be a DHCP list somewhere on your router's toolbox. These often seem to be carefully hidden within other sub-menus. If your router has an internal or external support link, search on that or on Google for either "connected device list" or "DHCP list" for the make and model of your router and that should tell you where it is. On my French house Livebox router, it is buried deep within a third level sub-menu. On my T-P Link Archer VR400 Router in the UK, it is in the Advanced settings of the Router toolbox, under Network/LAN (Local Area Network). At the bottom of that page is the list of connected devices. However in typical Sky sloppy IT work, they have not bothered to make the On Demand box declare itself as a named device to the DHCP server and it appears as "Unknown" but with an IP address matching that of the one shown on the Settings/Network page of the Sky Box . What you need to do in your case is to check to see if 192.168.1.17 appears on the list of connected devices. If it does then the problem does not lie between the On Demand Box and the Router but is almost certainly further upstream towards your ISP or between them and Sky.

Re: Sky on demand not connecting - sky plus box

Hi All

If we can get back to the original posting:

I am still having issues with no 'On Demand' service.

In my case, I use a static IP address for the Sky Box as well as all my networked devices.

All was working fine until I decided to rearrange and tidy up the ethernet cables.

Now my Sky+ HD box always states 'FAIL' for the 'On Demand' service.

All my other devices are still working as if nothing has happened (as they should) but not Sky.

I even ran a separate wired connection directly between the router and the Sky box, but still no joy.

I only have ethernet for the box so a WiFi option is not in question.

I have tried all the valid options about powering down then up again, but nothing appears to work.

I cannot beleive just how ridiculous this situation is. No other device has to be nurtured to get it working again!

Apart from scrapping it, does anyone know of a way that actually works?

Regarding WiFi for those who have commented:

Ethernet should be more stable (when Sky get it to work, that is!); however, WiFi may be faster!

The ethernet port fitted is only 100Mb but if your WiFi is faster then getting downloads is technically much quicker. If you get more than 100Mb WiFi at the box, then it may be worth trying.

If you are interested in discussing then please start a new topic!

Most people internet service is less than 100Mb so the Ethernet speed is not an issue, plus I doubt sky would max out faster connections as it never max's out my 72Mb fibre connection

Wifi may technically be faster on paper but faster is not always better, reliability is king

Far more people have issues with wifi than Ethernet

Re: Sky on demand not connecting - sky plus box

OK I've found a problem.

I factory reset my router and connected the Sky+ box directly as the only connected device.

The 'On Demand' immediately changed to 'OK'.

It did not when I used this method prior to undertaking a factory reset.

Tried various other things and eventually found it didn't like my original ethernet cable between my Sky+ and the splitter.

Replaced this cable and all now good again!

I guess I have damaged an internal connection when tidying up the cables.

Note: The 'On Demand' comes and goes immediately the connection is made without ever having to go through a power sequence.

What I cannot be sure of though is whether there is an aspect of a problem with my router too, as trying the same thing before didn't provide the same results.

Re: Sky on demand not connecting - sky plus box

In general for ethernet connections, I have found the fully shielded Cat 6 cables more reliable than the standard Cat 5 ones. For example my Krell Vanguard amplifier would not obtain an IP address when connected to a Netgear wifi extender with an ethernet socket, using a Cat 5 cable but connected instantly with a Cat 6 cable. I know they are a bit more expensive but the irritation factor of failed connections outweighs this IMHO.

Just a small point: it's Cat6A that's shielded.  The difference between Cat6 and Cat5 is each twisted pair is separated by a plastic cruciform moulding.

Re: Sky on demand not connecting - sky plus box

When I buy Cat 6 cables I just buy the ones marketed as fully shielded Ethernet cables.
