Hi, I'm getting sky installed as a new customer Friday. I live in a communal block and my neighbours have sky so it's already in the building.
the installer is applied broadcast systems and they're charging me £120 for install. Sky doesn't mention this anywhere when I signed up. Is it a scam? Worried.

Posted by a Sky employeeHi @Supernan22 and @mrpin1,
I had a look into this for you and can confirm that in some circumstances, customers may be charged additional amount by their MDU installation company when completing their install, these are Sky approved 3rd party engineers. This is because the particular company owns and maintains the communal systems and only them can install on to these systems. This is an agreement made by your Management Agent/Landlord/Establishment.
When an install is booked the company will ring to confirm the visit details, at that point you will be informed that there may be a subscriber cable install fee, typically around £100. This is a one-off charge, associated to the physical property and not the customer.
I hope this helps,

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@Supernan22 Sky are not responsible for communal systems. For standard installs Sky don't charge. I would query the charge with Sky if they have employed the company to to the install on their behalf.

hi @Supernan22 we can't say anything definitively.
This charge is not from SKY, however, with Communal systems the Buidling management are responsible for the feed to customers. & it sounds like they may have arranged for changes to be made by their Communal system engineers to enable you to get SKY

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@Supernan22 Their website suggests a first class communal IRS installation service, alas some customer reviews do not always agree. 😉 It looks as if £ 120 might be their standard charge for enabling Sky Q in communal IRS installations that they maintain.
As they are members of the Confederation of Aerial Industries, anybody who is not happy with their work could ask the CAI to mediate!

I got the same call from Applied broadcast service people, saying there will be a 125 pound charge cos you live in a communal block and they said i have to pay in advance. I spoke to sky and they said dont pay this and this is not something they had heard off. i have now spoken to 5 different people at sky and no one knows about this random charge.
if there is a charge sky should put it in the invoice and bill and i am happy to discuss but i dont see why we need to deal with a random engineering company.
My installation is due on Monday 7th Feb so i dont know if they will show up or not, but i am not going to pay a random company-- and just to add if you go and read the review of ABS on google reviews, you will see many people have complained about this random charge.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@mrpin1Sky only make a standard charge whether you have your own dish or communal.
Including in this charge is making a change to the distribution system by adding an adapter to convert it so sky Q will work, but this needs the permission of the management agent or equivalent.
HOWEVER there are many communal systems that are beyond the scope of what Sky will/can do in this case the work is done by the management agent or their provider in which case they can charge.
It is then your choice if you have Q or not.

@bob1234 Thank you for your response , i have spoken to my building management person and they said there is already sky in the building and they have given me permission to allow sky engineer coming out to set it up.
What i dont understand is - sky staff doesnt know about this applied broadcasting system company and their charges,
sky has asked me not to pay them directly
however this random company is saying that i need to pay ( £125), when i checked this with 5 different people in sky ( no one has ever heard of this)
Also if there would be additional charge i would assume sky would ask me for the money not ABS.
please advise if this 125 is a scam or a real thing that others have also paid in the past.
thank you

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@mrpin1I can't answer on behalf of Sky I am not an employee.
I would be tempted just to ask Sky to install and pay the standard charges you agree with Sky and no one else.
However I have escalated this to Sky and hopefully they will come back to you with a definitive answer, Private message or email, and be able to sort something out for you. Look for a blue blob bottom right of your screen.
PLEASE NOTE once you get the blob the chat is not real time and once you type in there could be quite a wait until there is a response, you don't have to hold the chat open just come back later to see any replies.
It seems that sometimes the "blob" does not show with Safari.
If you are using Safari with OSX, please make sure that Hide IP Address (under Privacy) is not checked in order to see the blue bubble.
