Sky Q and Sky+ In the same household - Some questions

Hi,

I have a couple of questions regarding Sky+ and Sky Q.

1. I have an old Sky+HD box. Can i plug this is and use it with my existing Q subscription (we have multiroom etc.)

2. If I'm only using the on demand services on Sky+HD, do i need a satellite dish connection or only Ethernet?

3. If above is yes, how easy is it to install another satellite connection into a new room, and how much will it cost (Sky VIP 15+ years, dont know if this removes any setup costs.)

I'm afraid the answer to your first question and therefore the other two questions, is no. Your Sky+ subscription ends when you take Sky Q, and the Sky Q LNB on your dish is not compatible with Sky+.

So, I cannot even use On demand without a dish? - Even though its over a network?

I'm afraid not. A Sky+ box won't start up if it's not receiving a satellite signal.

@Jackdoesthings If you already have a Multiscreen subscription, then all you need is another Sky Q Mini Box (£50 self install) and you would have full Sky Q functionality in the other room.

Re: Sky Q and Sky+ In the same household - Some questions

Yeah - The issue I have there is that we already have 3 mini boxes in 3 bedrooms (we have a large house), so If i were to add one to a fourth room, I wouldn't be able to watch sky as the others would already be in use - I'm less bothered about the Live TV, and more about the on demand stuff - hence why I thought my old HD box could be used

I know i could watch on Sky Go but I'd rather watch on the TV than a tablet/laptop. The TV doesn't have a Sky Go app, So i'm unsure as to a solution.

Could I use a HDMI splitter/HDMI over Cat6 to send the output from the main box to both it's TV and the second one in the other room? (we already have ethernet throughout the house)

@Jackdoesthings You could connect the laptop (though not a tablet) to the TV via hdmi.

Yes, but I suspect you'd need a point to point cat6 connection, rather than anything networked. Use an externally powered HDMI splitter. Unpowered ones rarely work with Sky boxes.

Re: Sky Q and Sky+ In the same household - Some questions

If i have a network like this:

Sky Q --> HDMI TRANSMITTER --> HDMI TO TV

                                         |

                     ETHERNET SWITCH

                                         |

HDMI RECIEVER --> TO 2nd TV

Im assuming that the network switch wouldn't interfere with anything - and a powered Base T HDMI transmitter and receiver would prevent a lot of signal degradation right?

To be honest, I'm not sure HDMI over Cat will work via an ethernet switch. Capabilities may have changed, but I've always understood that only a direct connection will work.

Do you mean upgarde to Sky Q @studio321 , if so nobody here can answer this but if you login to the Sky website and go through to your order your box and package see what price it offers you. Also check the VIP section of the MySky app incase there is anything there with regards to Sky Q.

Surely, if I have a sky HD dish and HD box with one Smart TV, I could also have a sky Q box with a seperate Sky Q dish with anotherr smart TV . That shuld be possible in the same household ?

IIRC you need planning permission with most councils to have two or more dishes

Secondly, sky's accounts system does not allow for both Sky+ and Sky Q at the same address

Thirdly Sky want to eventually get rid of Sky+
